COTC: Itch To Explore
It’s not unusual for the first episode of a cartoon to be a little awkward: shows take its time to finally find their rhythm, beat, tone or style. It has happened to some of the best, so I try to be patient and tell myself “this is just the beginning, let’s give it a chance”. You still have to make a compelling or at least interesting episode, but I think it’s pretty common, in hindsight, as still trying to figure itself out.
However, Craig of the Creek might be one of those cases where right away, from very early on, you’re fascinated.
So the show is about our titular character and his group of friends having these kinds of little adventures. What really makes this little cartoon is how big everything looks. There’s a constant sense of wonder and face valued seriousness that I have not seen in a while. I think the last show that truly made a little kid’s playing time as epic as this one does was Recess, and that was all the way back to the /early 2000’s and the last time I saw a
