Reader POV

Time flying by was most familiar to me, letting the world take shape as I idle by. Yet time was valuable and shouldn't be wasted. It shouldn't be wasted by sitting along the beach's end as I crave to jump in the refreshing waters of Mossdeep City. It shouldn't be wasted on me tirelessly fixing my hair while the wind made it a sloppy mess. It shouldn't be wasted on food that was getting cold in the picnic basket. Yet I had no choice, unfortunately.

And Steven knows this.

My blood ran hot, seething with unfathomable anger. My eyes squinted to prevent tears from flowing. My skin reddened with a sickly warmth like the evening sun in front of me. Yet all I could do was wait—tuck my knees against my chest—and contain the rage deep into my heavy heart.

An hour had gone by and I expected it. That was why I couldn't be too mad. I knew what was coming. I knew what I was getting into when I made Steven my partner...

Champion of Hoenn, rock collector of the century, son to a man who owns the Devon Corporation, and occasionally a visitor of the Space Center. He had his hands tied which I acknowledge.

But he promised he would be on time. A small part of me hoped he would but kind of expected he couldn't beat the clock. I hopelessly sighed and packed the bottle of wine into the basket. I froze when the sand behind me shifted. Soft footsteps closed in on me but I refused to turn to the source.

"Hey." Steven opened up.

"Hey..." I replied dryly.

"I see you've got my favorite!" He piped up, a forced cheeriness in his voice.

"It's warm now." I closed the basket.

"But I'd still enjoy it, y'know?"

"Mhm."

A disappointed and heavy exhale escaped his lips. He sat by my side along the beach towel, his troubled soul eased into the soft fabric as he stared off into the sea. He composed himself before he finally spoke to me.

"I'm sorry. My father wanted me to do something at the last minute. I told him I was meeting up with you today but I guess he had better uses for my time."

"Why can't he respect that?"

"I suppose he relies on me the most."

"But he can easily find a scientist your age to be involved with the Devon Corporation. It doesn't make any fucking sense."

"I know, I know."

"If you know, then why?!" I didn't expect myself to shout, my rage bubbling out like a sickening foam without control. My eyes darted across her face, searching for any answer. Yet his expression remained flat, fixated on the calm waters ahead.

It was a mere facade however, his trembling voice struggled to form a sentence. "He wants me to inherit the cooperation..."

"Oh c'mon, be honest, Steven. Do you?"

"No, but I don't want my father's business in the hands of someone irresponsible."

"Steven, it's—"

"It's not that simple, okay?" He retaliated. "There's so much that goes on behind closed doors that no one else can witness. On top of that, the whole region depends on us! The Space Center, the trainers who need our equipment, and the hard-working engineers who need their salaries. All while balancing investments and taking calculated risks. We can't just give the keys to the company to anyone with 'some' experience. Now you see the full picture?"

"I-, Steven, damnit..." He did make a pretty decent point, I couldn't doubt that. But it only served for more conflicted emotions, emotions I can't begin to put away. I fidgeted with my hair only for Steven's hand to gently grasp my wrist.

"Hey, stop that. I hate for you to lose your hair over this. I think I lost a few strands myself." He chuckled lightly as he released his grip, his hand landing on my cheek. His steel blue eyes drew me in, the sincerity in them coaxed me to listen. I gave my full attention as the world drowned out, only his words mattered. "I love you, ___. I know we're both still figuring this out and making time for eachother has been rough but it will be solved eventually. I promise."

Promises. No one could hardly keep them. What would make this case any different from the last? I couldn't bear to have another one broken by him.

Uncertain trickled into my voice as I whispered. "Promise?"

"I'll promise on my life. I'll make it up to you."

"How?"

"It'll be a surprise gift. Tomorrow, bright and early!"

"Well, you're gonna need more than a gift to make up for it." I smirked and grabbed his red tie, playfully twirling it between my fingers. He knew the cue.

But he replied with nervous chuckles. "I think I know what that is."

I gave a light yank to his tie, ushering him close, face to face. "Then enlighten me."

My words were clear and cutthroat, but he sat there.

Unsure.

His mouth parted, hesitant with inexperience.

Heh. What a shy tease.

I leaned in and closed the gap, sealing my lips against his. All of that tension washed away as we eased in. I didn't know I was craving him until my arms wrapped around him, engulfing him in a tight embrace. He laid himself on the towel, and I followed suit, gently resting on top to seep into his inviting warmth. Every inch of him was mine to claim: to hold, to have, to cherish. We got lost in it and took our time, savoring each kiss.

When we stopped, we realized we moved off the towel and soiled our clothes with the sand. But it was well worth the mess.

"Are you sure that wasn't my gift?" I stood up with a giggle. I tried to get the sand particles from my hair but I knew it was going to take extensive washing to get it all out.

"Er, no, but it'll be even better!"

"What can be better than this?"

"Hm. You prove a point." His spikey weakened to curvy strands, his shirt unbuttoned and crinkled, and his tie loosely fitted around his neck.

I had never seen this man out of shape but it only added to his charm.

Fuck. I'm in too deep.

I threw myself onto him and he accepted—catching me in another kiss—and going back right where we started.
