Description
I have long held an interest in ancient imagery. Those symbols whose true meaning have been lost to the echos of time. I love to take those images and re-imagine them filled with fresh meaning for the new age. One symbol in particular, the Sheela Na Gig, who is found primarily in British Isles; has always captivated me. Sheela na gigs are figurative carvings of naked women displaying an exaggerated vulva. They are architectural grotesques found on churches, castles, and other buildings. One of the theories for their meaning is that the carvings are remnants of a pre-Christian fertility or mother goddess religion. Another theory implies a legacy of sovereignty. Either way I find these carvings immensely interesting and this has lead me to recreate my own Sheela.

Starr Goode's book about the Sheelas is a must read.
