This is my shipping ranking for “The Familiar of Zero”, and why I ship them in this order. This harem shipping has Saito Hiraga with 8 possible love interests, the main one being Louise Françoise. Rankings divided into Top Shippings (who I ship with the character), Ok Shippings (not people I ship with the character, but who I wouldn't mind), and Low Shippings (people I do not ship with the character). This will include *spoilers*. This will include *spoilers*.
TOP SHIPPINGS
#1) Siesta – This is one of the few times where I ship someone who is not the main love interest over the actual main love interest. Siesta’s relationship with Saito is very sweet and loving, especially in the first Season; that’s my favorite portrayal of their relationship. Siesta is initially intrigued and inspired by Saito, especially with the way he rebels against the system, which quickly develops into a crush. After he saves her from forcibly becoming the mistress of a rich snob who thinks he can use his position to bully her, she falls completely in love with him. Their relationship feels very believable, and feels even more compatible than his with Louise. She starts to get a little desperate and forward later in the series when she realizes he and Louise have feelings for each other, which I wasn’t too fond of, but it often results in humorous situations. Saito also seems to have a crush on her, and is clearly attracted to her. He seems even more respectful of her than with Louise, and even seems more comfortable around her as well, not to mention he’s extremely protective of her. Their relationship is very close and very sweet, and I wish it was the one that prevailed in the end, but Siesta, eventually, accepted that it was Louise that Saito truly loved. Had she not been in the equation though, it’s very obviously Siesta that Saita would have ended up with.
#2) Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière – I know a lot of people didn’t like Louise, and I can understand why. She’s stubborn, arrogant, and presumptuous, but not in the funny or appealing way, and her treatment of Saito is just plan cruel at times. And while this treatment did drop her in the ranks, I try to keep in mind that this is a different culture with different customs, where such behavior is considered acceptable towards familiars and those of lower ranking, though I don’t consider that an excuse. While initially viewing Saito as nothing more than her property, she slowly begins to see him as his a person and grows to respect and care for him. She gets very protective and jealous of him, but pretends she doesn’t care, and is considered by many fans to be the biggest tsundere in anime history (rivaled only by Tora from Toradora). As the series progresses, she softens up to him more and more, though this also causes her to become more possessive of him, despite pretending that she doesn’t care. Saito, while initially hostile towards her in return for the way she treats him, warms up to her as well as he begins to see the other sides of her and learns more about her. He’s very protective of her, and gets jealous over other guys paying her attention. Despite having wandering eyes, he’s completely devoted to her, and grows more understanding and possessive of her as well. Despite the way she treats him, he puts up with it as his feelings for her continue to grow. They do share tender moments together, usually in private, showing how much they care for each other. However, due to the way their relationship is usually portrayed, I tend to view it as more comedic and not all that serious, despite it being the main pairing, which is why I placed them in the #2 spot.
#3) Tiffania Westwood – We didn’t get to see how Tiffania and Saito’s relationship developed due to the time jump, but it’s implied that they grew close. Tiffania clearly fell for Saito during this time, and her feelings for him remain strong, as evident by their reunion and their interaction with each other ever since. She cares about him very much, but seems to want to keep their relationship at the friendship level, possibly due to her friendship with Louise and/or because she seems to think Saito is out of her league. Saito cares about her a great deal, and is very much attracted to her, and is often found admiring her chest, but for the most part only considers her to be a friend, and seems to be oblivious to her crush on him. Despite this, he’s very protective of her and is quick to rush to her defense.
OK SHIPPINGS
#4) Henrietta – It feels that Henrietta’s feelings for Saito came about a little too suddenly, especially after her former lover was killed. However, her crush is very evident, especially during the masquerade party. And it’s during this time when, disguised as Louise, that she acts on her feelings, thinking it will be ok since Saito will think she’s Louise. She feels very guilty over this, especially when the real Louise discovers them together. However, she decides to put her feelings for him aside in favor of her friendship with Louise. Saito, however, doesn’t even seem to recognize her as a potential love interest. Upon realizing that she had a crush on him, he’s very shocked, as he seemed to think that she was too far out of his league and only seemed to view her as the queen. He does, however, show attraction to her, and it’s implied that he may have some feelings for her, or at the very least lusts after her. Despite their different ranking, he does consider her to be a friend and is protective of her.
#5) Kirche Augusta Federica von Anhalt-Zerbst – The relationship between Kirche and Saito is mostly built on lust. It’s made very apparent that Kirche likes to sleep around, and her feelings are pretty fickle, quickly going from one person to another. Her crush on Saito was quick and seemed mostly sexual in nature, coming across as a desire to simply get him in her bed and to steal him from Louise, but was not something to be taken seriously. This proves to be true as her feelings change several times throughout the series. Nevertheless, she continues to admire and lust after him, despite no longer making any advances to him, and the two seem to be friends, despite Louise’s disapproval of them having any sort of relationship. What she really seems to want from Saito is a friends-with-benefits relationship. Saito, likewise, also seems to simply lust after Kirche. He’s a little uncomfortable with her forwardness, but also seems to be happy whenever she tries to seduce him, and it’s implied that if it had not been for Louise’s disapproval, he would have given in to her seduction. It’s implied that he may have feelings for her, but they seem to be built on lust rather than love. Even after Kirche stops trying to seduce him all the time, they continue to maintain a friendship and are respectful of each other.
LOW SHIPPINGS
#6) Jessica – For the most part, the relationship between Saito and Jessica seems to be brother-sister. Be that as it may, it’s implied that Jessica sees him as more than that and has a crush on him. She makes attempts to try and seduce him, but she doesn’t seem to be serious and is mostly just playing around. There does seem to be some sincerity in her actions other than simple teasing, and it seems that she would like it if she could manage to seduce Saito. However, she’s also respectful of his and Louise’s feelings for each other, and this is why she doesn’t make any serious attempts to pursue him. Saito seems to feel uncomfortable around her when she tries to seduce him, but he is attracted to her. He views her as a friend, and possibly a potential friend-with-benefits, or at least he would if it were not for Louise. For the most part though, he only seems to consider her as a friend, or even a big sister character, despite being attracted to her.
#7) Tabitha/Charlotte Hélène d’Orléans – I really can’t take a relationship between Tabitha and Saito seriously. First, it seemed to come out of the blue, like literally during the last 30 seconds of the third Season, where she snuggled up next to him before whisking him away from Louise. Her crush on him seems to stem from him saving her, though it’s possible that she may have been developing feelings for him even before then. It’s hard to say since she never shows any emotion. Even in the fourth Season, she shows few and far between signs that she has feelings for him, but again, it’s hard to say what she’s feeling since she’s stoic all the time. Saito seems somewhat uncomfortable and bewildered by her crush, possibly because he doesn’t entirely know how to behave around her, and also because of his relationship with Louise. He does consider Tabitha to be a friend and is protective of her when she’s in trouble, but doesn’t seem to consider her as a potential love interest.
#8) Agnès Chevalier de Milan – It’s hard to tell what Agnès is feeling and who she’s feeling towards. It’s even implied that she may be a lesbian, but she has shown some interest in Saito. Whether this can be seen as a hint that she has feelings for him is debatable. She does seem to consider him a friend, or at least a companion in arms, and has respect for him, and any hints of feelings could be chalked up to as admiration. Saito, likewise, also seems to feel the same way as she does, seeing her as a friend and comrade, and is admiring of her and her skills. There are hints that he’s attracted to her, but it doesn’t seem all that likely that he has any actual feelings for her.
