Summary: Misun the vampire prince loses his precious crown. He and his werewolf husband Addie seek out the help of Misun's best guard, Zeph, and Zeph's husband and local healer, Lemonade. The party sets out on their worst double date yet, enraging the rival werewolf king of the rival kingdom who the suspect has stolen Misun's crown.
Quest to the Crown
“Give it up!” Zeph stood on the table of the king, unapologetically shaking him out from the ankles. Their party had successfully infiltrated the castle, sneaked passed the guards with no shortcomings in creativity, and finally found their way to The Boss Man himself. King Bastion’s pockets emptied, sending coins clinking against the silver-plated table and bouncing across the stone floor.
“Let me go! This is outrageous! I told you, we’ve stolen nothing!”
“Liar!” Zeph shook the scoundrel again.
Lemonade fretted. The blond seemed torn between outrage for Misun—who stood crownless next to Addie—and worry that Zeph might later be beheaded for the assault on the king. They may have been citizens of Misun’s kingdom, but they were presently in Bastion’s territory and thus within the governance of his borders. “Darling, you’re being a little rough…”
Misun’s face was getting red. Not one to lose his head in front of his friends, he’d been doing his best to keep from blowing a gasket. Yet frustration was growing in his chest each time Bastion refused to cough up his crown. Even as King Bastion lost all dignity, arms flailing within the robes that covered his face and muffled his protests, he would not concede it was time to return the stolen property.
“That’s it!” Misun stomped his hoof with a force that made even his bat ears jiggle. Addie jumped. “Give it back, you—” The angered vampire prince lunged forward, sword in hand.
Clink.
The sudden clatter of precious metal against the stone floor prompted a silence to fall over the room. Everyone turned to look at Misun who had turned a ghostly shade of white—except for King Bastion, who dangled precariously from Zeph’s grip, robes still over his face.
---
“It’s gone!” Misun wailed. Addie flinched as a pillow shot across the room, narrowly missing him. The projectile of course had not been aimed at him, but Addie was doing his best not to become an accidental casualty as his husband turned their bedroom upside down.
“Mon amour, take a deep breath,” Addie implored him, ducking again as a second decorative pillow was thrown into the wall. When the werewolf reached his distraught vampire, he slung his arms around his waist and pressed his face into his back. “It will turn up, but it will only be harder to find if everything is on the floor.”
Misun bit down hard on his lip and dug the heels of his hands into his wet eyes. Someone had taken his crown. With as many riches a prince had, one might think it was an easily replaced trinket. However, it was not justa crown. The ruby jewel set in the center was centuries old and believed to hold within it the key to immortality for the vampires that lived under the royal family’s reign. Whether that was true, superstition, or a blend of the two, no one had ever cared to (potentially) sacrifice their immortality to find out. “Addie, I have never misplaced it. No one before me has misplaced it. It’s not just that it’s missing—someone had to have stolen it!”
Addie shushed him soothingly, kissed his shoulder and hugged him tightly around his middle. “Then we simply need to get it back, don’t we?”
---
“You lost the crown?”
“No!”
Leomonade smiled sheepishly as Misun bared his teeth at Zeph. Zeph, Misun’s best knight, stood with his foot on one of his men who’d just lost a spar against Zeph for training.
“For the last time, it was stolen, and we need to get it back. You know what will happen if we don’t.” Misun crossed his arms. Addie rubbed Misun’s shoulder while Lemonade, Zeph’s sweet husband and local healer, nudged the hoof off the poor soul lying face down in the mud to heal his superficial wounds.
“It’s not like I can say no,” Zeph barked a laugh, but put a hand over his heart and bowed half-heartedly to Misun. “But I will enthusiasticallyhelp you find it since you asked so nicely.” Misun did not ask nicely, and it was a good thing the pair were such good friends, or he would have given Zeph a good smack on the spot.
Lemonade smiled, shooing off the healed lesser guard. “I’ll go, too.”
“Great!” Addie beamed, reaching out both hands to lace fingers with Lemonade, his best friend. “Then we should get going.”
The group agreed and soon, they were off.
---
It had not been easy to reach the castle of the rival werewolf kingdom from which their very own Addie had once hailed. There had been a band of rogues in the woods who had attempted to rob them. Zeph had taken care of them quite easily, but the second obstacle had not been as forgiving. The moat around the kingdom had crocodiles floating menacingly in the water, and Addie and Lemonade both had refused to allow a single scale to be harmed on their rubbery heads—not that Zeph or Misun were eager for any harm to befall an animal, but it did make punching his way through inconveniences harder for Zeph to work around.
They had instead scaled a wall, but were easily detected. That’s when the action had begun.
Zeph and Misun had taken the lead in fighting off the guards. Addie too, as a werewolf, passive as he was, had been able to fend off a number of assailants wishing to stop the attack on the castle. Lemonade was steadfast in healing both major and minor injuries sustained by his friends—and husband—during the fights. They were significantly outnumbered so avoiding injury altogether had been impossible. Without Lemonade’s skill they would have failed their mission close to immediately.
They had made it to the king successfully in the end despite it all. Zeph shook him by the ankles, and Misun demanded his crown be returned.
But something clattered to the floor.
When Misun lunged forward at the stubborn rival king, something clattered to the floor from his coat.
“M… Mon amour, is that…?” Addie covered his face with both hands, looking at the trinket from between his fingers.
Zeph was speechless and simply stared.
Lemonade groaned, rubbing his throbbing temples. “Oh, Misun.”
“… Well? What is it?!” Bastion roared angrily, thrashing once again in outrage from the sudden silence while being totally unable to see what was going on.
Misun’s crown laid in the middle of the floor from where it had fallen from inside his robe.
“Oof!” Thunk. Zeph dropped King Bastion onto the table and hopped down to trot to his party’s side. As the rival king shook his robes over his head and scrambled to reclaim his dignity in spite of his decimated pride, Zeph dropped to a knee, hand respectfully over his heart.
“Let me be the first to say I am so, so, sorry—”
Bastion straightened his own crown, and as the room came back into focus and his eyes fell on Misun who stared back at him like a deer in headlights. The Rival king’s eyes looked like they might pop out from his head.
“Is. That. Your. Crown?” He asked.
Addie hugged Misun’s arm. Lemonade hid behind Misun. Zeph was still bowed, grinning to himself at Misun’s blunder. Technically, the knight thought to himself, they did successfully retrieve the crown and complete their mission.
Bastion was not as amused, and the rivalling wolf king bellowed into the hallway…
“GUARDS!”
What it took to make amends was insurmountable compared to their journey to get there in the first place, but all in all, they had shockingly been able to appease the king. (Werewolves were, at the end of the day, big puppies—and a tear from Lemonade was enough to soften the king’s puppy-dog heart, allowing the party to leave without so much as an additional scratch.)
Still… Understandably, not a single one of them let the vampire prince ever live it down.
