“Alright girls, this is it.” Samantha Gray grinned, pulling out a flashlight and clicking on the beam. “Showtime.”
“Ah, okay…” Marsha Maynard adjusted the large white glasses on her face, peering through the darkness at the shadowy shape of the looming mansion before them. “But…I mean, do we really have to do this at night? Wouldn’t it be way easier to do it during the day?”
“The lights have only been seen in the old Jackson place at night,” Tracie McNeil said, slapping Marsha on her shoulder. “It’s the perfect time for an investigation, Marsha.”
“Yeah, but…” Marsha swallowed, looking up and down the street they stood on nervously. “I mean, do we really have to do this on Halloween?”
“Oh come on, Marsh,” Sam said with a laugh. “What are you afraid of? Ghosts?”
“Uh, no…” Marsha twisted her hands nervously around the flashlight she held.
“Nothing to be afraid of,” Tracie said confidently, crossing her arms. “If it is a ghost then we’ll clobber it.”
“You can’t clobber a ghost, Tracie,” Marsha squeaked. Her eyes looked down the dark street again. This area of town was far away from the street lights and the suburban neighborhoods where kids were going trick or treating. There was nothing here but empty fields and abandoned houses. The streetlights were all broken and long abandoned, so that the only light came from the silvery moon.
Sam looked over at Tracie and laughed.
Tracie gave the redheaded college girl a sharp glance. “What’s so funny, Sam?”
“Oh, I don’t know,” Sam said with another laugh. “It’s just kind of hard to take you seriously in that hat, Tracie. You do make a great pirate though.”
Tracie looked down at her tall, athletic body. She was wearing a rather revealing pirate costume, but she definitely had the body for it. A ridiculously large pirate hat was perched on her head, her long blonde hair jutting out from beneath it in a long ponytail. A brown and white corset showed off her toned body, open in the front to reveal her impressive cleavage. Brown frilled shorts, thigh-high fishnet stockings and cuffed boots completed the outfit.
“And you make a great cowgirl, Sam,” Tracie said with a smile.
Sam grinned and did a little twirl, tapping her cowboy boots on the asphalt. “Ya like it, pardner?” she said in an exaggerated country accent. “I reckon it’s good enough for this here investigation.”
“I don’t think real cowgirls wear outfits like that, Sam,” Marsha said as she fumbled with her flashlight.
“What? What’s wrong with it?” Sam brushed her shoulder length red hair back and looked down at herself. She wore a cropped red top that showed off her generous cleavage, tied in front just below her breasts. On her lower half she wore only a pair of faded blue denim shorts and calf-high cowboy boots that showed off her long legs. A black cowboy hat was perched jauntily on her head.
“Nothing,” Marsha said with a roll of her eyes.
“Oh, Marsha’s just jealous because we’ve got the sexy costumes,” Tracie chortled. She crossed her arms. “Where’d you get the nurse’s outfit, anyway? Is that one of your Mom’s?”
“No…” Marsha blushed as she glanced down at herself. She wore a classic nurse’s one piece outfit, the white buttoned up uniform showing off her surprisingly large breasts as they strained against the material. A cute little white hat was on her head, almost covering her long black hair done up in high pigtails. “I mean, this is sexy, right…? It shows off my legs.”
Tracie and Sam glanced at each other.
“Uh, sure, Marsh,” Sam said with a sympathetic smile. “You make a great nurse.”
Marsha’s blush deepened even more. The moment the other two girls were looking the other way, she undid the top of her outfit, jiggling her breasts a little to show off more cleavage.
“I’m always up for dressing up like a slutty pirate,” Tracie said as she crossed her arms, “especially if it’ll get a cute guy to glance my way…but, I mean, wouldn’t this be easier if we weren’t in these outfits?”
“Oh come on, Tracie,” Sam said with a broad grin. “It’s Halloween. And we’re undercover. This way we blend right in with all the other trick or treaters.”
“We’re in college, Sam,” Marsha sighed. “I think we’re a little old to be trick or treating.”
“And it’s not like anyone is going to see us out here,” Tracie agreed, looking down the dark street. A gust of leaves scattered out into the street. “Kind of feels a little silly.”
“Come on, girls.” Sam stepped in front of the two women, spinning around and spreading her hands. “This is an adventure. A freaking Halloween adventure. People have been seeing lights in this old house for weeks now, hearing strange noises. No one’s supposed to be living here. It’s up to the Nosy Dolls to investigate this mystery and crack the case.”
“Yeah, but what if–” Marsha cast a nervous glance toward the house in front of them. “I mean, what if this place really is haunted? What then?”
“Come on, Marsha.” Sam opened the front gate of the picket fence and clicked on her flashlight. The hinges screeched like a dying cat. “This’ll be fun.”
“If you’re scared,” Tracie said with a half smile at Marsha, “you can stay out here on the sidewalk.”
“No, I’ll…I’ll come along,” Marsha said with a nervous swallow.
“That’s the spirit!” Sam thrust her hand out towards the other two girls. “Nosy Dolls never say die!”
The other two girls put their hands on hers.
“Never say die!” they both repeated.
Sam smiled. “Let’s do this.”

“Hello?” Sam slowly pushed the front door of the mansion open. “Uh, trick or treat…?”
“Doesn’t look like anyone’s home,” Marsha whispered, peering around Sam at the dimly lit entry hall.
“Lights are on, though,” Tracie said as she nodded up at a chandelier, which was glowing with a dim light. “Somebody’s here.”
“Which means we probably shouldn’t be,” Marsha said nervously, looking back over her shoulder.
“I’ll bet there’s a bunch of commie spies in here,” Sam said with a devious glint in her eye. “Let’s search the place. Everyone got their flashlights?”
Tracie and Marsha both nodded.
“Wait,” Tracie said suddenly. “I think I’ve seen a ghost.”
Marsha almost dropped her flashlight. “R-really…? Where?”
“Right here.” Tracie turned to face Marsha with a smirk. “You’re white as a sheet, Marsh. Come on,we're safe enough. The power is probably still connected to the house. Doesn't mean there's anyone actually here."
"Or it could be bank robbers," Sam said, pulling her cowboy hat down with a sly grin. "They're probably hiding out here so the cops can't find them."
Marsha frowned. "I'm not scared, you know."
"Come on," Tracie said, pushing the other girl forward. "Let's go inside."
The three women walked into the mansion, looking around the entry hall. The floor was marble, with a huge staircase leading up to the next level.
"Okay," Marsha breathed. "We can do this. We just all need to--"
"Split up!" Sam finished confidently. "Tracie, you take the upstairs. I'll take the main level here. Marsha, you’ve got the basement."
Marsha's eyes went wide. "Are you crazy? We're splitting up? Isn't that like the absolute worst possible thing we could do? Haven't either of you ever seen a horror movie before?"
Sam turned, raising her eyebrows. "Have you?"
"Well..." Marsha shifted her flashlight in her hands uncomfortably. "Well, no. I get startled easily. But I still know we shouldn't split up!"
"Oh relax, Marsha," Tracie said as she adjusted her large pirate hat. "We'll be fine. If anything goes wrong just come back upstairs."
"A cult," Sam said with a wide grin. "I'll bet that's what's going on here. A Satanist cult hiding out in this old mansion. Oh wow, this is going to be so much fun."
"You and I have a very different idea of what is fun," Marsha muttered.
"Oh come on, Marsh," Tracie laughed, smacking her friend on the shoulder. "Live a little. We'll prove the house is haunted or full of commies or ghosts or something. And we'll go down in history as the girls who solved the mystery of the lights in the old Jackson house."
"Then...well then maybe can we go trick or treating?" Marsha's cheeks reddened. "I mean, we are in costumes and all..."
Sam laughed. "Sure thing, Marsha. As long as you don't think we're too old for it." She winked at Tracie.
"I think a lot of guys in the neighborhood would love to see us in outfits like this," Tracie said as she struck a pose. “Count me in.”
"Alright," Sam said. "Let's get searching."
This is a short Halloween story featuring the Nosy Dolls, a trio of college girls who like to do some amateur sleuthing and usually end up getting into trouble. This is their first "actual" story, as their prior outing was in a choose your own adventure which you can find here. For the full CYOA game, you can find it on itch.io here.

So our heroines decided to investigate the house where the mysterious lights are. Well, I hope that our Marsha will experience incredible experiences during contacts with spirits that can affect the mind. And as for Tracie, she will probably have the opportunity to see that spirits can use a rapier and bonds, not to mention other methods of putting detectives who interfere in their own affairs to sleep. And as for Sam, well, she will probably meet Doc Holliday, who will decide to use chloroform to perform a tooth extraction operation on her.
