Life has been a busy intersection of empty souls passing by I would reach out toward empty arms fading smiles broken promises This was existence Life at it’s best? I cared for others who would always fade and leave at the moment I cared most. On and on this went struggling to find even a happy moment I gave up hope Resigned myself to continued existence Nothing to look forward to But one day there was you at first, timid It was you who reached out first This was something new and a slow progress began leading me here Here: a place I’ve never seen With beauty, acceptance, and Love I had thought this place was just a dream I had heard about but couldn’t believe. Now, I can believe. This journey brought me To you Though the road has been rough and the times have been lonely Waiting for you has been worth all.

What Do I Say

I’ve spent a lifetime missing you. I wonder what I can say anymore. Can I ask how things are going? I’m often confused and hurt as I plot through each day hiding how crippled I am and my hurt. I used to believe I heard you coming down the hall. My breath would catch and I would feel a fleeting moment of happiness that vanished as soon as I remembered. Do I ask how you are? I’m lonely and scared— have been for decades. I’m used to my heart fading along with hope, but the pain is still fresh. I often wonder if I would remember what you looked like if I didn’t have those few pictures. Do you miss me? Often I would fake days of freedom away from your memory. It never really worked. In the back of my mind you are always there and always looking like heaven— surrounded by my sorrow. I used to blame you at times. Each October I stand here As fallen leaves damask haphazard arrangement yellows and reds In natural brilliance.The heads of these stones Stand above this sea of color.It was October twenty years ago When, in your stillness, You were brought here With box and grave faces. The last I saw of you.I have been faithful. In the braced air I visit Though I have no words. I want to believe you are here Want to believeAnd each October I turn my Back on the leaves and the stones And the air and the grayBelievingBelieving? Fall colors can return to green And bring you back again.

Between Light and Dark

Suffering in the rain, while dancing under the stars. I know light will break through; that light will cast a shadow, but shadows give shade on a hot summer day, so I'll stand in that light and let the shadows fall. Love in the light and love in the dark, knowing both will come and go. The little stars twinkling in the sky, reminding me how alone we are in this cold, vast ocean makes love harder in darkness and light, knowing forever isn't coming and now is all we have—now is everything we have, and in the presence of now, I don't feel so alone. Rain pours and stars shine, as Now wraps a scarf around my neck, and in the midst of suffering, we dance on together.

Of the many ways you love me, here is one the way your blond paw repeatedly paws my arm so you can tell me everything will be alright so you can tell me there is a sad trapped inside my body and how even well meaning people ignore it because they don’t know what to do with it except to leave it alone You wish you could take the sad outside to set it free or call a sad- understander to come help the sad all you can do is watch the sad and feel for the sad and if you could, you’d write with that paw- you would tell me how a poem feels useless but you are wrong You are a sad- understander more than I could ever be who paws my arm repeatedly to drag the sad out of me.

do you remember when we’d write poetry on rainy days and weep? you were so alone and i was so embroiled in love that bruised and broke. i thought he’d lost his old gods--the snowfall and the firelight of love but all there’d ever been to him were caverns. holes. maws never sated. those gods were only lies drawn on curtains, hiding monsters behind them. but you. but you were lemon balm in flower beds, plantain in the fields. you were stakes tied to my sapling life, more color than any spectrum. and now we plant our garden beds, nurse sunlight and sparkle through the dark. now, we plan our meals around the dinner table. you take off your shoes and i take off my laces. now, there is a home in me, meant for you.
