“I’m bass-ically the best musician in this room. ...Good one, right?”
Name: Rainbow Harvest
Nicknames: Harvey
Parents: Applejack and Rainbow Dash
Special talent: string instruments
Although he tries to be the best pony he can be, Rainbow Harvest is somewhat of a bully by nature. He recognizes it in himself, and he goes out of his way to be friendly, helpful, and good. But Harvey has his moments where he forgets himself. He pushes ponies around, takes teasing too far (as long as he's just talking than he’s not hurting you, right?) and can be all-around disrespectful. He really isn't trying to be a jerk, he's trying to be playful. Coming from a family of brutally honest, brash, boasting ponies, he has some trouble realizing that most ponies are a little more sensitive than that. Realizing he’s hurt ponies upsets Harvey deeply, and luckily he has his friends to help him correct his behavior when he goes too far. He may also be a little thick-skulled, but he’s doing his best.
Despite his unconventional way of showing friendship, underneath it Harvey ultimately is kind to the core with a desire to help and befriend anypony who will let him. Despite being a world famous rock star he’s really just a simple farm boy, with a passion for music that takes priority over all else. The pegasus is passionate, honest, genuine, and as stubborn as both of his mothers combined. That can be a hinderance, but his inability to give up also been a driving force behind the success of his band, Bed Of Thorns. Harvey’s greatest passions, besides playing his instruments, are song writing and keeping up his physique—Harvey likes to remark that he’s married to his bass, but don’t tell his weights.
Relationships:
Harvey learned his unpalatable way of being loving from his mothers, who love him more than anything, and he loves them right back. Mirroring her own parents (to her dismay, once she realized), Rainbow Dash is Harvey’s biggest fan—before Bed Of Thorns got big enough to tour, Dash made sure to have front row seats to every performance, and still cheers her son on in any way she can. Harvey’s relationship with Applejack has been a little more tense than with Dash, ever since he started to truly dedicate himself to music. It’s tradition for every Apple foal to learn an instrument, and she was quite encouraging when her son found his talents on the banjo—but Applejack had always expected that Harvey would stay on Sweet Apple Acres, to eventually take over when she retired. As much as she loves him, Applejack is stubborn and stuck in her ways, and doesn’t know what to do with this unexpected turn of events. Though she tried to accept his change in profession, their tension still came to a boil when Harvey revealed to his mothers that Ace had taken on Svengallop as their band’s manager, with Harvey’s full consent. The argument immediately devolved into a shouting match that could’ve made the barn collapse, ending in Harvey storming off of the farm. He hasn’t spoken to Applejack since.
Rainbow Harvest has known Stardust—son of Moondancer and Sunburst—since their first day of first grade. As they were waiting for class to begin, the hefty pegasus fell out of a tree that Stardust was sitting under, and directly onto his head. Startled and hurt, Stardust started crying, much to Harvey’s horror—Harvey was so distressed that he immediately flew back into the tree and fell out again, this time landing on his own head, which made Stardust laugh. They’ve been best friends from that moment on, bonding particularly when they discovered their mutual passion for music! It’s been jam sessions, talks about why you shouldn’t be so rude, and lots of hugs ever since.
Harvey has spent time with Sweetie Belle’s son Acoustic Performance since the younger colt was able to speak, but they became inseparable when Harvey tried to introduce Ace to his biggest passion, music, and accidentally helped the colt earn his cutie mark. They get along like a house on fire, constantly encouraging each other and egging each other on. Without studious Stardust to reign them in, the boys would probably be the cause of more trouble than they’re worth.
Harvey made friends with Giraffititan, a young royal guard and son of Gilda and Garble, when they were introduced by their mothers as children. Harvey’s goofy antics amused the more serious hybrid, and they played together whenever their mothers would meet up. Once they were old enough to not have to tag along every time their parents left the house, the two didn’t see each other for several years, until Titan moved to Equestria to join the royal guard. Since then, they’ve rekindled their friendship, and are frequent sparring partners.
When it comes to his cousins Wild Wes and Swifty Scuffles, Harvey and Wes see eye to eye on just about everything, and any time they don’t, well, they can wrestle about it and whoever wins is right! As for Swifty, her sensitivity doesn’t mesh well with his brash, pushy way of showing affection, and he has more than once made her cry—entirely by accident, and he apologized quite genuinely for days on end. Swifty was quick to forgive him, and he’s grown kinder with the help of his friends. They love each other, but Harvey is afraid to hurt her. When he can tone his whole thing down, they do enjoy each other’s company—especially when she sings his songs as he plays guitar.
His cousin on Apple Bloom’s side, Ruby Apple-Tiara, is an absolute enigma to Harvey. The colt is quiet, plotting, always seems to be thinking about something, and is honestly just plain creepy—things he would normally tell somepony to their face, but he’s always felt the need to sleep with one eye open when he’s annoyed Ruby before. As off-putting as he finds him, Harvey still shows his cousin with familial affection... just kinda carefully.
Scootaloo’s son Carpe Diem is Harvey’s unofficial cousin, and despite the boiling hatred between Carpe, Ace, and Ruby, Harvey has always considered him another best friend. They haven’t got much in common, but Harvey feels protective over the scrappy younger pegasus, and they know they can always rely on each other when times get tough.
