Feliz Navidad, Estela (Part I)
Estela glanced up at the clock for what must have been the tenth time that night. It was already 9:20 PM and her boss, Mr. Biggs, still hadn't shown up. He was running late (as usual). Estela was tired after a long day, and she wanted nothing more than to take a hot shower and then curl up in her bed...but Mr. Biggs had promised to make an announcement after closing time on Friday night. She wondered what he had to say, and she was determined to stick around to hear it. With Christmas around the corner, the announcement could be anything. Maybe they would be required to work extra hours to handle the holiday rush. Maybe they would recieve a generous holiday bonus! Or maybe he was going to finally reveal who would be replacing their head chef whenever he left to work at their new location.
Estela hoped that it was the last one. She had been working at Tucker Biggs' bistro for three years. She knew that she had more than proven herself to be a competent and talented sous-chef in that
you told me
that no one could build a home here.
i felt your eyes on my ribs
where the mere skeleton of a house stood.
your gaze roamed
down my body
as if i were an open highway.
you said I'm meant for
sight seeing,
that I'm a journey
& not a destination.
but the hearth in my heart glows warmly
& aches for family dinners
made with love.
