Description
Cape Canaveral. This is a resub - the original picuture was taken with an old Motorola flip phone from 2001 - pre-smartphones. Finally was able to clean it up and get it fixed, which was a bit of a challenge when you think of the megapixel allowance and lack of camera quality with those old phones. An outdated picture was able to be brought to vivid black and white life with some highlights and contrast using modern software.
The process mirrors the subject of this picture as well; this building, in 2001, was a marvel of technology and a source of national pride, with the Cape producing maybe a few thousand jobs. It housed the shuttle for repairs, etc. The building is lonely these days. A standing relic of an era that just ended and a remembrance that we are part of every day's flux of history. 100 years ago, this building would have been a train station for a steam locomotive - now this house for a human "space ship" has become outdated already. It's lack of use has cost the space coast many jobs as well. A once thriving area with an impressive amount of brain power is now a foreclosure hub and desperation spot where it comes to employment. I used to work out there; many of the families that also did are now in the downward spiral along with the American Dream.
It is a blistering pace we advance at these days. This building and the surrounding compound that has historical Apollo pads and more, serve as a literally enormous reminder of the tsunami we are all caught in at the turn of this century. The compound is still used by Boeing, NASA, and the like for satellite launches.
