In 2006, two angels Malachi and Daniel stand atop a skyscraper discussing their current predicament of a rouge demon named Kazann escaping Hell. Daniel informs Malachi that both Heaven and Hell have sent hunters to track Kazann down. Daniel suggests that it'd better for them to have a pawn of their own capture Kazann before telling Malachi of Johnny Blaze. He explains that 30 years prior Blaze made a deal with Mesphisto to save the life of his mentor Crash Simpson which resulted in him becoming the cursed Ghost Rider, who is currently condemned to Hell. Divulging that Kazann harbors a particular secret that can threaten his status in Heaven, Malachi hatches plan use Johnny to capture Kazann and hide his crimes against Heaven. Daniel agrees with much reluctance and the two initiate their plan. In 1997, Blade awakens in a destroyed building, badly wounded. After he retrieves his teakwood katana from the charred skeletal remains of Deacon Frost, he somberly looks upon the corpse of his friend Jericho Drumm, who died while attempting to help him kill the vampire who murdered his mother and made him a dhampir. Placing his katana in its scabbard, he promises not to leave Jericho's body and picks him up before departing the building. While exiting, Blade notices an old man sitting amongst the rubble, fiddling with a saxophone, who tells him that he did the right thing. Blade hesitates for a moment upon the old man but continues on, silently carrying his friend's body outside. A year later in New Orleans, Aldes Yancey makes out with a young model named Deborah in the backseat of his limo, en route to his manor. The two continue to wrestle in the backseat as the limo begins riding over the uneven ground of the bayou. The slight turbulence alarms Deborah but Yancey reassures her

Four months after slaying Varnae, Blade awakens in a haze of disorientation and finds himself aboard a S.H.I.E.L.D. airship. He is greeted by S.H.I.E.L.D. director Maria Hill who informs him that she needs his help. Blade is initial distrustful of her and reluctant to help until Hill reveals to him that she believes the Vampire Nation have come into possession of the Darkhold, further explaining that their possession of it is his fault. Blade begrudgingly agrees to her due to his disdain for vampires and Hill reveals that she has an assignment he is "perfect for". The airship arrives over New York and Hill divulges that Manhattan is now quarantined due to a large scale vampiric attack. Returning Blade's gear and weapons, Hill tells him that she will provide him support as he quells the attack, wishing him luck. Blade tells her he "don't need luck, just silver" before leaping from the airship. Landing in Harlem, Blade makes his way through the neighborhood which he finds occupied by
