Narrator: This is a story that happened in the ending days of the age of magic. A time of knights, magic and princesses. Grand kingdoms, epic battles of good and evil....only one thing missing; Dragons. Why is that, one may ask? To put it simply, things are rarely as black and white as they seem.
Episode title: Princess and the Dragon
We open on a landscape shot the kingdom of Yggdrasil; a thriving town that blends medieval architecture with forestry and the colors of the rainbow. We see citizens going about their days; Centaurs pulling carts while giving lectures on what they’re carrying, fairies using magic to help out wherever they can, humans farming while dwarfs dig up minerals and gold. Goblins inspect the minerals and pay the supposed worth.
Cut to a small cottage, where young children of all races are rushed out. The school day is over and their parents are picking them up...all save one; a rather depressed looking little boy in princely garbs.
Pike: Sis? Sis?
Unknown: Hey kid, you okay?
Pike looks up at the speaker; a teenage in a red and green leather jacket with hair like downwards flames.
Pike: Sorry, I’m not to talk to strangers.
???: Good to know. My name’s Derrick. What seems to be the problem, little guy?
Pike: My sister’s running late.
Derrick: I know the feeling. My big brother is never on time for anything.
The two share a chuckle
Derrick: But...I’m getting the idea that’s not the only thing bothering you. What’s really going on, kiddo?
Pike explains that some bullies (who are still nearby) stole a toy boat his sister made for him. This sets Derrick off and he confronts said bullies, who are quick to unleash magic on him (and breaking a rule set by the king, but that goes ignored because they’re elves)...only it just tickles Derrick. He then takes the toy back and tells them to scram, not noticing Pike looking at him in awe.
Just then, Pike’s sister Princess Tymon finally arrives. She was held up by their father and apologizes, listening to Pike regale what Derrick did.
Tymon gets a good look at the person with her baby brother: spiky hair, almost like horns, claw like nails, greenish skin and sharp teeth....and with smoke escaping his mouth as he glares at one of the bullies who was aiming to throw a rock at Pike.
Derrick: You try that again and I’ll burn your lands to the ground! Got it, ya little….?
The bully runs away screaming as princess gasps, pushes Pike behind her and lets magic surround her.
Tymon: Stay away from my brother, demon!
Derrick: (Confused) Demon? (Offended and angry) DEMON?!? Lady, I don’t know who you are, but don’t EVER compare me to those scumbags!
Tymon: I am Princess Tymon of the Faye. And if you’re not a demon, what are you?
Derrick opens his mouth to speak, but nothing comes out. As if realizing something, his finger goes cartoonishly limp and his jaw snaps up. He then looks away
Derrick: You probably never heard of my kind anyways.
Tymon: All the more reason not to trust you. Stay away from my brother.
Pike: But Ty, he...
Tymon: No. Buts. Let’s go
As his sister drags him away, Pike mouths ‘thank you.’ Derrick smiles weakly and turns to walk away, pausing briefly in realization and smacking his forehead.
Derrick: That was the princess, wasn’t it? Man, that really was not my best first impression…..then again, she wasn’t…. (His stomach growls) Forget it...where can a homeless and coin-less guy get himself some grub?
His stomach rumbles again, much louder this time.
Derrick: Well, wherever it is, I better find it fast. Turns out three days do go by faster when you’re hungry.
Tymon and Pike then meet up with Tymon’s friends for some tea and snacks. Tumble-weed, Zany, Dew and Jewel are all interested in this newcomer, albeit for different reasons; Dew refuses to comment and mentions having to pick someone up soon, Zany is interested in fighting him, Tumble-weed recalls her grandpa telling a story of similar creatures and Jewel is convinced that Tymon and Derrick would make a great couple.
An angry giant then attacks, demanding to face Tymon’s father, King Oberon. The giant reveals that Oberon has denied his people, all refugees, entry into the kingdom of Yggdrasil, after promising such. His son died because of this and he seeks revenge on the king.
Tymon has her friends take Pike and civilians to safety while she tries to calm the giant down. Sadly, she is unable to and upon learning her father will not be coming to deal with this giant, begins fighting him with her magic, show casing her specialty; turning things into their opposite state/ converging darkness into light or strength of her attackers into magic for herself. She nearly subdues the giant before seeing a picture of his son, which the giant uses to break free and slam her down to the ground.
Tumble-weed, Zany, Dew and Jewel try in vain to defend the princess, but are pushed aside. Pike then stands in between the giant and his sister, who tries to shield him...but the impact never comes.
Tymon looks up to see Derrick, holding back the fist with a foot and smiling.
Pike: Mr. Derrick?
Derrick: Just Derrick, kid. (turns to Tymon) Great speech and great fight, princess. Looks like I was right about you after all. How about I handle this, and we call it even?
Before Tymon can answer, Derrick kicks the fist back, sending the giant reeling
Giant: WHO DARES?
Derrick (off-screen): Down here!
The giant looks around
Derrick (off-screen): N-no! Left! Your left! I mean your right! I mean..just follow the voice! Ya just missed me! Back, back, THERE!
Derrick, hands in his pockets, walks forward.
Derrick: Look pal, I’m not sure what your deal with this place is, but I’m going to assume it has something to do with her dad. And....full disclosure? I hate the guy just as much as you probably do. Heck, if we met under different circumstances, you and I would probably be throwing a few drinks back and making fun of everything he ever did.
Tymon (confused and angry): HEY!
Zany: Who’s side are you on?!?
Derrick: Still...you’re putting a lot of folks at risk. You just tried to squish a new pal of mine. And then, ya had the gall to try and hit a lady. A very powerful and brave one, but a lady nonetheless.
Tymon blushes ever slightly, which her friends notice and smile knowingly about. Jewel takes out a notepad and starts doodling Tymon and Derrick
Tumbleweed/ Zany: Jewel, no.
Jewel: Jewel, yes!
Derrick: So... (Derrick’s jacket suddenly opens up into two bat-like wings. But there is a greenish tint to them and while sharp, there is an almost regal quality to them) How about we wrap this up, big guy?
Civilians gasp at the sight of Derrick’s appearance, a few even screaming as he takes to the air, sending the giant reeling with a hit to the chin. Enraged, the giant roars, sending Derrick backwards before his foe grabs a farm and tosses it at the boy. Derrick weaves underneath and grabs the undergrowth, tossing the farm downwards before realizing the skies are darkening under the giant’s fist.
Smirking, Derrick throws a fist of his own, the impact creating a shockwave. The giant’s eyes widen and he lets out a yelp, finding a burn on his finger
Bean: YOU…YOU WRETCHED DEMON!
Derrick (enraged and annoyed): I’M NOT A MAB-DARNED DEMON!
Bean starts swinging his fists wildly, which Derrick notes and smirks at. He arches his head back as he takes a deep breath, fling back and opens his mouth, from which flames erupt.
Derrick: BLAZING BREEZE!
The giant screams in pain and falls to the ground rolling but flings a house at our hero.
Derrick:..Well, may as well.
CRASH!
In Derrick’s place is a reptilian humanoid with a noticeably red 6 slashes scar on its chest, resembling a cloud with a moon in it. Its brow has horns and Derrick's hair has become fins.
Derrick: Ahhhhhh! That feels so much beter! (realizes everyone is looking at him) Like I said, Princess, you’ve probably never heard of my kind before: I’m a dragon
JUUUUUST realized I never even posted part one of the pilot! Whoopise! my bad!
Here it is, the first part of the pilot episode to 'Knight Dragon.' A very standard Shounen anime/manga style opening...and yes, the Dragons will have a calling their attacks penchant.
Knight Dragon is a story I've been working on for years: My attempt at a Saturday morning cartoon akin to what I grew up with in the 1990s and early 2000s, but hopefully having something for all ages and walks of life while also discussing some heavy topic without talking down to the audience.
The biggest inspirations for this story were Greg Weissman's 'Gargoyles' (Shakespere references apleanty incoming and further down the road), Nakaba Suzuki's 'Kongoh Bancho' and while sadly not shown fully in here, WITCH and MLP: EG.
Character profiles to come within the next few days and weeks, hope you enjoy and stay safe
