Marnie gave the young colt a reassuring pat as he gazed around the arena at the others. He was quite a lot different from his dam, who had entered this very same competition a few years ago. She had been grumpy and resentful of being led around on parade, but her son Jive ogled the arena in wonder. Marnie thought she could guess his thoughts — all these new friends. He looked like it was the best day of his life. Every now and then he'd call out in a high pitched shout, his mane had been tamed into a row of little braids that Marnie was particularly proud of.
Marnie, noticing it was close to their turn, grabbed a few blades of dry grass and flicked them towards Jive, who was still nickering away under his breath.
"Jive, let's go!" Marnie encouraged her young noisy charge.
She tugged gently on the rope and went to set off around the arena. Jive, absolutely overjoyed, picked up into a bouncy trot, trying his best to show off to anyone who glanced his way. When they eventually reached the top corner of the arena, Marnie smiled at her colt as the morning light bounced off his roan coat, glad he was enjoying himself.
