Alien Project

This is the alien concept i came up for Character design class. the assignment requirements were to create a turn around but i ok'd it witht he teacher to do different angles of the same Alien. i also included an environment with other creatures and a pup version of the creature to give an idea of how it lives and stuff.

I dono what to call them.... but i still wrote this anyways.

About The Species:

The creature is aroud the same size as a porpus or dolphin on Earth. However unlike mamals of earth their bones are comprised of hard cartilage and the skeletal structure of the creature is reversed in a way with the ribcage and lungs on the top of its body. 4 airholes on its back alow it to breath and quickly take in air while surfacing as they dart in and out of the water in bursts of speed. they can reach speeds of up to 70 knots in bursts. They feed by opening their four mandables outstreaching the tough but flexible membrane. they swallows whatever will fit in thier mouth. the diet is that of an Omnivore. Inside there membrane and mouth are gill like structures that move like falling dominos and act like an esophogus in swalowing motions to keep the food they have cought inside thier digestive system where toxins/acids kill and break down the food quite eficiently.

They are capable of staying underwater for a week at a time. they can do this becasue of two ways. the first is they may store air in thier red poutch the other is that thier skin can obsorb certian amounts of Oxygen from the water. the reason they must surface is to replenish thier oxygen suply. even though they can filter some of the air out of the water it is not enough to keep them sustained indefinately it is more of a last resourt to keep them alive if they must dive deep to escape larger predators patrolling the high sealevels.

The red colored poutch is only on males as it is a way to impress females. the larger the pouch may expand the better. its color becomes vibrant and a bright red during mating season, otherwise it remaines an rusty orangish red.

Females pouches are where thier pups develop as oxygen and nutrients flow through the region in greater quantities as well as the perfect environment for maintaining and regulating temperature. During this time however the female is more vulnerable as it cannot stay submerges as long as it normally can and must surface frequently to get air for it and the developing pups. it is also why many females will turn to land as a safeground as they have no predators on land.

At this time the males will defend them fiercely to the point they will take on preditors ten times bigger then themselves. thier defences consist of a poison membrane that will excreet out from the neon stripes on their back and coat them in a toxin. Like snakes of earth they may bite and inject a poison. However they may controll the toxity level of the poison depending on how threatened they feel at the time. it could be a mild burn to a deadly paralysing mix. there are however some predators that have antibodys to fight against such mixes and are the creatures natural predator.

During birth the mother will open her mouth and restrict the poutch to force the pups out in to the water. alot of self control on her part as the babies swim within her membrane jaw as she protects them while they develope further. eventually they will get large enough to leave the protection of the mother but will most often remain with the pod. these creatures are verry social and curious creatures much like thier porpus conterparts from earth and will not attack unless prevoked. in fact they will play with things they find new and unusual. They are the most inteligent species on the face of the planet but not the largest or most threatening.

They live on a mainly aquadic planet but there are some islands so they are also able to walk/hop on land and are one of the only species that can besides the floating creaters of the planet that use hydrogen filled sacks to fly in the lighter air.

welp hope you guys enjoyes i tottaly came up with this stuff outta nowhere so sorry its stange... i sorta was shooting for strange tho as they are Aliens after all heh.
