N7 Battalion, 501st Legion

Description

The N7 Battalion is a regular Clone Infantry Battalion that is a part of the 501st Legion, consisting of 661 Clone Troopers under the command of Battalion Commander CC-07/11-2019 'Shepard'.

Originally known as the 1981st Battalion, this unit was formed on alongside the 501st in the early days of the Clone Wars and originally didn't draw much attention to itself in terms of anything unique or amazing until Shepard was assigned command of this Battalion after completing his training for the role of a Clone Commander - and about three months before the Third Battle of Kamino. Once Shepard was assigned to command the Battalion, the 1981st saw a major hike in success rates and an increase in tactical coordination from the battalion, but the biggest change was the increased dedication and loyalty to Commander Shepard thanks to his unique command style and his unwavering commitment to ensure no brother was left behind - alive or dead.

By late 21 BBY, one the Phase II Clone Armour was issued out, the entire battalion, as a way to show their dedicated loyalty to Shepard (having now learnt where he got his nickname), all members repainted their armour from the standard white to the dark grey style - but retaining the 501st Markings - that was similar to the Commander's and even mimicked the Arm Stripes as well (unlike Shepard's, the troopers were Blue with two White Stripes) and even adopted Shepard's Blue Visor and the N7 emblem that was on his chest piece. After seeing this, Shepard was stunned by the show of support and showed his approval by stating that they were no longer known as the 1981st Battalion - they would now be known as the N7 Battalion.

After changing their name, the N7 Battalion continued on in campaigns against the Separatists with the 501st Legion with a unique degree of success. One unintended side affect of changing their armour colour to their now unique dark grey was that it would help them blend in with any area with a dark enough shadow - which was to come in very handy during the infamous Battle of Umbara due to the dark nature of the planet and it's conditions, which helped the N7 Battalion to perform their own ambushes against the Umbaran Militia that they performed on the 501st's Torrent Company very early in the campaign, though N7 Battalion wouldn't come out of this intact as 50% of the Clone Troopers that made up the N7 Battalion were KIA thanks to General Krell's disastrous tactics, the very infamous friendly-fire incident between the 501st Legion and the 212th Attack Battalion and the move to apprehend the traitorous General.

In fact, due to the Battalion's experience on Umbara, the entire Battalion has a new marching song that reflects the entire Battalion's view on the Battle of Umbara, replacing the traditional Mandalorian marching chant “Vode An” ("Brothers All") that all Clone Troopers knew - something that was completely unheard of. This new song of their was coined up by an unnamed ARC Trooper that's part of the 501st Legion.

Despite this, N7 Battalion would continue to perform admirably and in such an effective fashion, that it was rumoured that Captain Rex himself was envious of the N7 Battalion and Commander Shepard due to the fact that they were out-performing his Torrent Company.

While the vast majority of N7 Battalion was the rank-and-file Clone Troopers in various roles (medics, heavy weapon specialists, etc), about 20% of the Battalion was comprised of BARC, ARF (Some of these acting as Communication Troopers) and Clone Scout Troopers. In addition to this, N7 Battalion has at least one ARC Squad under their command known as 'Normandy Squad' and is rumoured to have a Clone Commando Squad permanently assigned to their ranks...

So, a week after N7 Day for this year, and a solid day of re-texturing and adding new elements to this, I can now present the N7 Battalion.

As I stated when I revealed Battalion Commander Shepard, this is what I've been planning and working on to help celebrate N7 Day for 2019. For me this year, after starting to create my own Clone Troopers, I've wanted to pull off a Star Wars/Mass Effect crossover here - in addition to a proper Mass Effect image.

As originally stated, The idea behind the N7 Battalion (and Battalion Commander Shepard) was this old image from 7 years ago

After some solid work and three days before November 7th, I actually did manage to pull off having Regular, ARF, BARC and Scout Troopers re-textured to look like what you see in the image linked here, but I modified slightly (mostly the Red Stripe changed to Blue and added the 501st Legion's markings over the grey armour). However, originally I actually wanted to try and have the Phase II Clone Armour try to resemble the N7 Armour that we can use in Mass Effect 2, 3 and Andromeda, which did include the carbon fibre textures.

However, as I found out, Trying to use Carbon Fibred textures in Garry's Mod that you knocked up in Photoshop (I was using this pattern - Carbon Fiber seamless by PeterPlastic), in photoshop it looks superb, but when you have it applied on your model - that's a whole different kettle of fish. When you are standing close to the model, the textures are ok, but once you move away from it a small distance away, the textures then go all small and shift pattern design drastically (it's a visual thing, not a game issue, that I saw, but I don't know the scientific term for it), so I had to redo all the armour textures by replacing the Carbon Fibre textures and replace it with a Cod Grey colour fill instead to give it a resemblance to Onyx Armour in Mass Effect 1.

The end result is what you see in the image.

Be advised, that this ISN'T  the whole composition of the N7 Battalion as I do have an ARF Trooper model that does wear ARC Trooper Gear (I didn't add this model in because I didn't want to have a large 'base' image to work with in Gmod - yet....). Also, I do want to try and get some Clone Paratroopers into the mix as well, I've just got to find a suitable model that meets my standards for this stuff.

NOTE: In case anyone chips me on this, I forgot to pose Shepard's elbow pads properly when I was in Gmod and I only noticed this tonight - and believe me, I've already been kicking myself for missing this.

Regardless, I hope you all like it!
