Some effects (fire) are easier to pull off than others (smoke) with vector tools, but I prefer to do them that way rather than 'cheat' with raster layers just in case I someday need to upscale this for some reason - I've had too many misadventures with smaller-than-I-thought-they-were images to take chances.
I have a suspicion that the holographic medical droid was a nod to Voyager, but I'm not certain.
