Okay, I know this is an old journal so maybe I get an award for responding so late, but I'm gonna reply anyway.
I think HDR is a good tool and has it's place. I am not fond of the images that are poorly done (aka halos) and I prefer a more natural look to the HDR, but I don't think you should give it up totally.
I haven't been doing a lot of HDR lately, but a few weeks ago I shot a place I may never get to go to again and I really wanted this one shot...but the sun was shining and pretty much ruining my shot. So, I took several shots at various exposures. Last night I processed 4 raw images in Photomatix and am very happy with the results.
There's no replacing good photographic talent, but sometimes the HDR is necessary to salvage a shot. Plus, if it's done right....it can even make the original image look better.
