My Bio

I’m John Lanthier, a young French-Canadian, self-taught artist.

I was born in India and traveled extensively throughout Asia in my youth. I believe the experience I have gained through interaction with many unique cultures has strongly influenced my art by broadening my creative horizons. Seeing the variety of expression in eastern ethnic art inspires me to experiment widely with a range of media. The themes reflect my interests by in philosophy, religion, portraiture, and surrealism. I am currently studying for the Bachelor of Fine Arts at Concordia, Montreal.

I am interested in connecting with other artists, models, photographers and curators to collaborate with on creative projects. I also take commissions for portraits, murals, paintings, and other artworks. The works in my portfolio are also largely available for sale. Please inquire as to availability and pricing information. I hope you can find in my gallery of strange and colorful compositions something beautiful to enjoy.

Feel free to email me comments, advice, or make project proposals.
I'd love to hear from you.

They are done in many different sizes and media so there should be something for everybody to enjoy. All the works are available for sale at reasonable prices. I'd absolutely love for all my friends to come by and check it out and invite their friends as well. The Vernissage is next Friday night (3rd Feb) but the show's on for a month so if you can't make it then it's alright. Drop in an...

About Me

0 min read
I'm a 20-year-old French-Canadian, self-taught artist.  I was born in India and traveled extensively throughout Asia in my youth, which left a lasting impression on me and my work. The diversity of artistic output I encountered through my travels convinced me that the creative impulse is international, indestructible and fantastically infectious. Since I began creating at 12, I've moved from comics to portraiture to balloon sculpture to abstract and finally surreal painting. I enjoy experimenting widely with a range of media and pushing the boundaries of painting by incorporating sculpture and tactile elements with my works. I too am inter...

An Examination of Shala Rosa's 'An Incarnation of the Female Surrealist Muse' and its basis in Surrealist philosophy and art. By John William Lanthier Feb 20 2011Surrealism has always held a profound attraction for me as it has for many others since its inception in the early 1920's. Its unique amalgamation of eroticism, surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and non sequitur makes for powerful and haunting works. It is as contradictory as it is mysterious. Matter becomes metaphor, the ordinary object achieves extraordinary status, and the resulting images evoke emotional disturbance and ambiguity in place of specific ideas. It was always a c...
