Mario Over the Years

Got a reference sheet going on for Mario, and how he looked over the course of the series.  Of course, other than the huge time skip between the Yoshi sub-series and Super Mario Bros. (1), not much time really passes between the games in the main series, with Mario being 24 years old as of the more recent titles, according to Miyamoto himself.

So you'll notice his facial appearance and height stops changing once he becomes an adult.  But the colors of his main outfit, while still red, blue, and with brown shoes across all images of his adulthood, are different hues between each console era.  I chose to do it this way for flashbacks in Super Mario JBX to Mario's past adventures, to give a slight sign of the passage of time.

This was inspired by how Pokémon the Series handled flashbacks, where they redrew the scenes to fit the current season's art style, but still kept Ash Ketchum in the clothes he had at the time the flashback takes place.  Of course, it's an easier tell with Ash, since his outfit changed for each arc, while Mario sticks with the long-sleeved shirt & overalls combo for a majority of his games.  Though you may also notice some smaller changes besides palette swaps that correspond to the art style of that console generation.

You may also have picked up on the fact that Mario's hat stays the same shade of red the entire time; that was to show that even though he gets newer versions of his clothes, his hat is still the same one he had ever since he was a newborn.

At any rate, as always, hope you all like it! (kudos to whoever gets the reference on Mario's shirt when he was of elementary school age!)
