Ember: Burning Bright by Jade Gretz

The air hung heavy with anticipation within the Orokin Vault. Ember, clad in her sleek black and gold Warframe armor, felt a tremor of unease crawl up her spine. Unlike the usual bustling Tenno relays or the war-torn landscapes of Grineer planets, the Vault was unsettlingly silent, its polished metal walls reflecting an eerie red glow from the ceremonial torches.

Lotus, her ever-present guide, remained strangely silent. In her place, a holographic projection flickered to life, a spectral figure draped in flowing robes, its face obscured by shadow. This was Ordis, the long-dormant guardian of the Vault, and his voice, when it finally spoke, sent shivers down Ember's spine.

"Welcome, Tenno," it rasped, the words laced with a coldness that felt unnatural. "You stand on the threshold of mastery. To unleash the true potential of your fire, you must face the trials of the Forge."

Ember straightened, steeling her resolve. Mastering her powers, the ability to summon and manipulate flames, was a lifelong dream. But the way Ordis spoke, the foreboding atmosphere of the Vault, all whispered of danger lurking beneath the surface.

The first test, Ordis explained, was simple – navigate a labyrinthine passage while extinguishing flickering torches with precise bursts of flame. Ember, confident in her control, zipped through the twisting corridors, her Warframe a blur of black and gold. Each burst of flame from her fingertips extinguished a torch with a satisfying hiss, leaving behind an unsettling darkness.

But as she reached the end of the labyrinth, the darkness deepened, becoming a palpable entity that pressed down on her senses. A monstrous growl resonated through the chamber, and from the shadows emerged a grotesque creature – a twisted amalgam of flesh and obsidian, its eyes burning with an unnatural purple fire.

Ember reacted instinctively, her fists erupting in a fiery blaze. The creature, however, seemed to thrive on the heat. Its obsidian hide absorbed the flames, and with a chilling screech, it lunged towards her. A desperate roll saved her from its razor-sharp claws, the creature's touch scorching the air where she had stood a moment before.

Panic surged through Ember. This wasn't what she had expected. This wasn't a test of control, but a brutal fight for survival. She dodged and weaved, flames erupting from her fingertips in a desperate dance of defense. But the creature was relentless, each attack pushing her closer to exhaustion.

Just when it seemed defeat was inevitable, a flicker of inspiration sparked in Ember's mind. Remembering a forgotten lesson from an ancient scroll, she channeled her flames inwards, superheating her body. With a bellow that echoed through the chamber, she released the searing heat in a colossal wave.

The creature, caught off guard by the sudden shift in temperature, recoiled with a shrill shriek. Its obsidian hide began to crack and smoke, revealing the charred flesh beneath. With a final, desperate burst of flame, Ember finished what she had started, the creature crumbling into a pile of smoldering ash.

The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by Ember's ragged breaths. She had passed the first test, but at a terrible cost. The creature, a product of the twisted experiments within the Vault, had revealed a darkness she hadn't anticipated. A darkness that, she realized with a chilling certainty, was just beginning to stir.

The second test was a stark contrast to the first. Ember found herself in a lush, verdant garden, sunlight filtering through the artificial canopy. Birdsong filled the air, and an otherworldly fragrance hung heavy in the warm air. In the center stood a single tree, its branches laden with shimmering fruit.

Ordis' voice, now seemingly infused with a honeyed sweetness, called out, "Consume the fruit, Tenno. Its essence will amplify your flame."

Ember hesitated. The beauty of the garden felt deceptive, a stark contrast to the grotesque trial she had just faced. She reached out tentatively towards a fruit, its luminescent glow beckoning her closer.

As her fingers touched the fruit, a jolt of searing pain ripped through her. Her vision blurred, the idyllic garden morphing into a grotesque nightmare. The trees twisted into menacing shapes, the birdsong morphing into haunting screams.

The fruit, once beautiful, became a pulsating mass of writhing tentacles. Fear, a primal terror, threatened to consume her. But amidst the pain and terror, Ember felt a surge of heat – a new, volatile power rising within her.

It was then that she understood. This wasn't a test of control, but a test of will. The fruit, imbued with a twisted Orokin essence, was designed to twist her fire into a weapon of pure destruction. But Ember refused to succumb.

With a roar of defiance, she channeled the new power coursing through her veins, but not in the way the Vault intended. Instead of unleashing an inferno of chaos, she focused the volatile flame inwards, forging a barrier of molten heat around her. The pulsing fruit, unable to breach her fiery shield, withered and shriveled, its corrupt essence dissipating into wisps of dark smoke.

The garden around her shimmered, the grotesque illusions fading to reveal the lush oasis once more. Ordis' voice, now tinged with a hint of surprise, echoed, "Intriguing. You have not simply mastered the power, but bent it to your will."

The final test was a crucible of fire itself. A vast arena, its floor a molten lake of incandescent lava, surrounded Ember. From the molten depths, grotesque creatures, all burning with a sickly, greenish flame, emerged.

Ember knew this was her ultimate test. To truly claim mastery, she had to not only control fire, but exist in harmony with it. Taking a deep breath, she channeled her power, not in a burst of destruction, but in a controlled surge.

The flames from her fingertips no longer burned with a searing intensity, but with a gentle, flickering warmth. It calmed the chaotic flames surrounding her, drawing them in, weaving them into a swirling vortex of fire that danced around her like a fiery cloak.

The creatures, sensing the shift in the fire, hesitated. They had been created to thrive on chaotic flames, and Ember's controlled inferno countered their very nature. One by one, they started to falter, their sickly flames flickering and dying.

Seizing the opportunity, Ember launched herself into the fiery vortex. She felt no pain, no discomfort. The heat danced around her, a familiar companion rather than a foe. As she navigated the molten lake, the flames responded, parting to create a path, coiling around her to create fiery platforms to leap upon.

Reaching the center of the arena, she faced a colossal creature – a warped amalgamation of flesh and fire, a monstrous manifestation of the Vault's corruption. Its eyes burned with the same sickly green flame as the fallen creatures, but with an intensity that threatened to engulf everything around it.

Ember stood her ground, the fiery vortex swirling around her. The creature roared, launching a wave of its sickly green flame. But Ember, at one with the fire, simply raised her arm. The vortex swirled faster, drawing the green flame in, absorbing it, and channeling it into a single, blindingly white beam.

With a focused push, Ember unleashed the beam towards the creature. It struck with the force of a supernova, engulfing the monstrosity in white-hot fire. The creature, its essence annihilated, dissolved into a cloud of ash, leaving behind an unsettling silence.

The flames within the arena subsided, the molten lava cooling into a blackened obsidian crust. Ember stood alone in the center, the silence broken only by the ragged rhythm of her breaths.

Ordis' voice, now filled with a newfound respect, boomed through the chamber, "The trials are complete, Tenno. You have mastered your flame. You have become more than a wielder of fire, but a dancer within its embrace."

As the holographic projection dissipated, a wave of relief washed over Ember. She had faced her fears, overcome the Vault's twisted trials, and emerged stronger, more in control of her fire than ever before. But a sliver of unease remained.

The corruption within the Vault, the twisted creatures, the deceptive nature of the tests – it all pointed to a darkness lurking beneath the surface. A darkness that, she realized with a newfound awareness, extended far beyond the walls of the Orokin Vault.

Emerging from the Vault, Ember stepped back into the familiar bustle of the Tenno Relay. But the world seemed different somehow. Now, she saw the flickering candles, the blazing furnaces, the very energy that flowed through her Warframe – all with a newfound understanding, a sense of responsibility.

She was a master of fire, but the true battle, she realized, had just begun. The battle against the ever-present darkness, a battle that would require not just control, but a burning resolve to protect the light. The flames danced on her fingertips, a constant reminder of the trials she had faced, and the fight that lay ahead. She was Ember, Tenno of fire, and she would burn bright.
