Description
Background:
After being infected by the X Parasite, Samus Aran is rescued by the Galactic Federation, which successfully counters the parasite through their use of a Metroid-based vaccine. However, it was soon discovered that Samus’ suit was also infected by the X Parasite. While the Federation was successful in removing most of the suit for examination, several components were too integrated with Samus’ body to be separated safely.
The infection continued to spread throughout the parts of the suit still attached to Samus, mutating and growing to replace the components which had been removed. Because of the vaccine, Samus’ body was able to accept the changes without harm, and she soon found herself wearing what became known as the Fusion Suit.
Although comparatively lightly armored compared to her other suits, the Fusion Suit’s biomechanical nature allows for unprecedented mobility and regenerative properties. The lack of magnetized boots and thrusters means that Samus must rely on her grappling hook and the grips on her palm and soles to maneuver in a space environment. At the same time, the suit retains her signature arm cannon and morph ball abilities, while adding several features for close quarters combat.
Despite being incomplete, the Fusion Suit proved more than capable of handling Samus’ mission and ultimately defeating the Omega Metroid in orbit around SR388.
****
I always thought that the Metroid: Fusion suit looked funky compared to Samus' other suits, so I decided to redesign it to be more of an organic design to set it apart from the typical mechanical exoskeleton that she wears. Also used this as an opportunity to practice a character sheet style that I'd be happy with in case I want to do some future designs.
Lots of trial and error, but it was a fun project to work on. Hope you enjoy!

I just rediscovered this fascinating design. I imagine back then the designers wouldn't go TOO far into the biomechanical direction so as not to alienate fans too much. However, the Metroid suit in Dread went in this direction. How do you like the Metroid suit?
