Star Trek: Reach for the stars

Nyota closed her eyes and felt Hikaru's heartbeats under her hand, slick with burning hot blood staining the yellow shirt an ugly shade of looming death. If she relaxed she could almost feel the small planet turning beneath her, in time with Sulu's heart, in time with hers, round and round and round for all eternity, making the stars above them dance in brilliant diamond patterns. Her right hand was throbbing from being clenched around the hard blaster for so long, but she didn't dare to release her grip, not yet. Not yet.

They were still out there. Still hunting them.

The cool fog twirled around their bodies, leaving small beads of condensation on their skin and clothes, already cold and heavy of moisture. She was trembling and knew that if she was risking hypothermia, Hikaru was even worse off. His body was so soft and pliant beside her, but not in a good way, not how it should be. His normally warm, golden skin was chilling to the touch and taking on a terrifying shade of blue to match the fading night sky around them. His beautiful dark brown eyes were hidden behind closed lids and his ebony hair fell lifelessly onto his smooth forehead. She didn't know how much longer they could hold on, how much longer before... she didn't dare to think it.

Maybe if she only concentrated on their heartbeats, round and round and their breaths in and out then maybe... maybe they'd be okay. Maybe she'd somehow be able to keep Hikaru's heart beating in time with hers.

Just long enough.

In. And out. Round. And round. In...
