Description
Alone and desolate for ages, Rollo's world had become bleak. Days stretched into nights, each one colder and more unforgiving than the last. Hunger gnawed at his belly, and despair weighed heavy upon his tiny frame. His eye had been wounded in a fight with a nasty bird some time ago and now he couldn't open it.
As he lay beneath the shelter of the tree, Rollo surrendered to the weariness that consumed him. He closed his good eye, his fragile spirit on the verge of breaking. In that moment a small part of him wished that he would slip away into an eternal slumber, free from the ache of loneliness that pierced his soul.
But just as he felt himself drifting into the abyss of dreams a gentle warmth enveloped him. Rollo stirred from his fitful sleep, his heart pounding with confusion and fear. Was this a dream, or had someone finally come to rescue him from his solitary torment?
Blinking back tears of exhaustion, Rollo found himself cradled in the hands of a little girl. Her eyes were pools of compassion as she gazed down at him, her touch feeling gentle and warm. In that moment, Rollo felt a flicker of hope ignite within him, finally something to fight against his despair.
The girl's voice was soft and soothing as she spoke to him in her strange human babble, but her words were comforting and soothing. With gentle hands, she lifted him from the cold, damp ground, holding him close against her chest. And as she pressed her cheek against his fur, Rollo felt a warmth spread through him unlike anything he had ever known.
For the first time in what felt like an ages, Rollo dared to believe that maybe, just maybe, there was still hope and goodness in the world. As the girl cradled him in her arms, he closed his good eye, his purrs a silent hymn of gratitude. He was no longer alone.
