Chapter 1: Summer Date

It was a warm, sunny day at the Piston Peak National Park - A beautiful British national park located within the green, hilly county of Lancashire. Summer had only just begun. The park was filled with clear blue lakes and rivers, large and wild waterfalls, grassy hills covered in tall pine trees, and beautiful mountains and moorlands surrounding the park. It’s popular amongst travellers and fascinates millions and millions of visitors every year with its gorgeous landscapes and sights.

On the side of one of its mountains lay the base of the Piston Peak Air Attack Team. They were a team made of brave aerial firefighters and Smokejumpers.

The chief of the Air Attack Team was a young male helicopter named Blade Ranger, originally from the Lancashire countryside. He was a hybrid; mainly resembling an AgustaWestland 139 due to his parents, but his genetics also resembled the AW189, AW109 and he even had some features dating back to the Bell 429 GlobalRanger.

Blade is mainly painted red with most of his underbelly painted white.

He has white stripes on both of his sides right above his side doors, going over his tail fin.

The top of his nose is painted black.

He has 2 black chevrons on his bodywork, in between his fuselage and tail. One smaller at the start of his tail boom, followed by another, much larger one, both of them pointing towards his fuselage.

Along the thin white stripes on his tail is the inscription of Piston Peak, and on the black stripes on his engine intakes is his registration "N626BG", both of them in white.

Between his red and white paints is his modex number '301' in black on one of his side doors on each side.

Toni, a young, female AgustaWestland AW109 with emerald green eyes, is his fiancée. Her paintwork is mainly white with sections of dark blue on her engine compartment, bottom and upper tail fin, and landing gear compartments.

Summer had just begun. It was May and the weather was warm and balmy - around 20 celsius or more. It wasn't too hot to start many wildfires yet, but fire season would soon be arriving within the next month or so. It was normally a stressful time of the year for the fire team.

The warm weather was already starting to warm up and dry out the land. Vegetation would soon dry up from the increasing temperatures, which would increase the chances of fires around the park. The regular thunderstorms in the summer made it even easier for fires to occur. The team had to be ready to go out at any time.

It was especially hard for Blade. As the chief, he had the most responsibility and most of the weight of the stress was resting on him. The team along tried to help him where they could, but it still was always very difficult for him.

After his regular morning patrols of flying around the park, searching for spot fires, Blade decided to take some time off and took Toni on a date through the park and up to a lake in V6 Valley. He wanted to enjoy every single moment he could get with her and didn’t want to waste any chances before fire season really kicked in. He loved spending time with her.

Blade and Toni were following a path through the forests of V6 Valley together. They were out on a date together, just the two of them. It gave Blade the chance to take a little break from work before the next emergency. Blade had to be available at a moment's notice in case something came up, but apart from that, he didn’t want to think about work right now. All he wanted was to enjoy as much time with Toni as he could and to just wind down for a little moment.

They rolled down the soil path leading through the pines. Daylight filtered through the leaves and pine branches of the trees above them, creating little pockets of sunlight on the forest floor. There were no other noises apart from the quiet, muffled sound of the ground crunching beneath their wheels and the chorus of twittering birds. There was the distant, quiet babbling sound of water nearby.

“It’s nice getting out again for a bit.” Toni spoke.

“Yeah..” Blade agreed. He needed quiet, tranquil moments like these to take a break from flying after fires and typing up fire reports. Toni knew how stressed he always was and she hated seeing him like this, so she was glad that he could finally take a well deserved break, at least for a little bit.

Toni smiled sweetly at Blade. “Yeah… Just you and me…”

Blade looked down at her and smiled back, warmly.

"Perfect." He added. Toni’s smile widened.

They could hear the sound of water getting louder as they approached a lake.

They arrived at a little freshwater lake surrounded by woods. A gentle gust of wind travelled past them, grazing the leaves on the trees, causing a soft rustle and creating tiny, faint waves on the still water of the lake. The water mirrored the green hills surrounding it. Toni and Blade looked about themselves, admiring their peaceful surroundings.

“This place is beautiful.” Toni said, slightly smiling to herself. Blade nodded in agreement.

“It is.” He responded in a low tone. Toni nodded. “Just like you.” Blade charmed her. Toni turned to face him, staring at him with wide eyes, blushing a little. Blade lovingly smiled down at her. Toni smiled back.

“You charmer.” She giggled. Blade chuckled.

“I know.” He said, jokingly, making Toni laugh. Toni then looked at the lake for a moment before slowly rolling towards it, stopping right before the edge of the shore. She slightly lowered her head and looked down at the clear, shimmering water below her. The water was as clear as glass by the bank.

“Look at how clear this water is!” She exclaimed with a bright smile on her face.

“Just be careful not to fall in.” Blade joked, sarcastically, slowly approaching her from behind. Toni chuckled and slightly turned to look back at him.

“Yeah right!” She retorted, grinning back at him. Blade grinned and came to a stop right next to Toni, letting his gaze wander over the water. “I don’t wanna fish you out of the lake. I'd do it, but I wouldn’t like it.”

Toni giggled and nuzzled Blade’s cheek. “You won’t have to.” She said. Blade smiled and nuzzled back.

“Let’s keep it that way.” He said in response. Toni grinned.

“Yeahh.” She agreed, jokingly.

After a moment, Blade bent down towards the water, looking into it.

“Hmm… it doesn’t look that deep to be honest.” He mumbled after a short moment. He then rolled forward and slowly entered the lake until the water reached his underbelly. Blade then turned around to face Toni. “Come on!” He called to her. Toni smiled and raised an eyelid.

“Isn’t it cold?” She asked, feeling unsure. Blade chuckled and gently shook his nose.

“It’s quite mild here by the bank.” He responded.

“Okay then.” Toni responded, still smiling, and with that, she slowly rolled forward and into the lake until she was at the same water level as Blade.

“Ooh!” She reacted. The water was warming up by the hot sun, but it was still quite cool.

“Not that bad, is it?” Blade asked Toni, who was standing right in front of him.

“It’s not too bad, to be honest. But still cool.” Toni responded.

“See?” Blade smiled at her. Toni smiled back.

“You’re right.” She said, “It’s pretty refreshing.”

A cheeky smirk suddenly made its way onto Blade’s face. “You know how it would be even more refreshing?” He asked Toni, who slightly narrowed her eyes in a curious manner.

“How?” She asked. Blade bit his lip before splashing water at Toni with his nose. Toni let out a high-pitched yelp and she ducked and turned away from Blade as she was splashed in the face with water. Blade started laughing. Toni opened her eyes widely and her jaw dropped.

“Blade!” She exclaimed and looked over at Blade with a wide smile, looking surprised.

“Now you’re soaked.” Blade said with a grin. Toni raised an eyelid in a flirty manner and smirked.

“Well, you’ve done that to me many times before… in the hangar.” She said before biting her lip. Blade grinned and splashed more water at her again. Toni turned away from him and laughed.

“Blade! Stop it!” She shouted, not being able to hold back a wide, joyful smile. Blade laughed in return as she splashed him back. The two of them continued to frolic by the lake’s edge, laughing and giggling, and continuing to splash each other.

The pair of them stopped after a while.

“Okay then, that’s it.” He said with a wide smile on his face. Toni stopped as well, still laughing.

“Good.” She responded, giggling. Blade slowly approached her, slightly lowering himself, holding his nose underwater. Toni narrowed her eyes at him suspiciously as he came to a stop in front of her.

“What are you-” Toni couldn’t finish her question as Blade quickly raised his nose out of the water and spat a long jet of water at her, laughing as she shut her eyes and turned her face away from him again. Toni then opened her eyes again, widely in surprise.

“Oh, you cheeky sod!” She exclaimed and splashed more water in Blade’s face as payback. Blade laughed and turned away from her. They stopped again after a moment, giggling and enjoying the moment together. They then happily smiled at each other for a moment, Toni's emerald green eyes meeting Blade's deep, icy blue ones, until Toni eventually rolled forward and leaned into Blade's side. Blade released a satisfied snort and the two choppers embraced, closing their eyes.

“I love you, Blade.” Toni quietly spoke against Blade’s side after a moment. Blade’s smile widened and he gave her a long kiss on her side.

“I love you too, Toni. So much.” He replied.

They cuddled for a little while longer until Blade broke the silence.

"Shall we stop somewhere for something to drink? I'm parched." Said Blade, lowering his nose to look at her. Toni smiled. "Of course." She replied with a nod before a smirk appeared on her face as she leaned towards Blade. “Or would you prefer a wet tongue?”

Blade grinned at her remark. "Maybe later." He winked at her.

They turned to roll out of the water and onto the bank, drying themselves off under the sun. Blade pulled up next to Toni and shook himself dry, spraying drops of water all over her.

"Blade Ranger!" Toni shouted at him, telling him off. Blade just laughed back at her. Toni smiled. It wasn't often that Blade could be so cheeky and mischievous. She found it cute and funny deep down.

They decided to roll along the bank together, side by side, in conversation. Toni remembered about Blade's mentioning of stopping somewhere for a drink.

"Do you wanna go to the Lodge for a drink?" She asked him. Blade paused and stared ahead, thinking to himself. The Grand Fusel Lodge had recently been restored, but Blade had no interest in going there.

"No." Blade responded gruffly, "Not while he's there." He rolled off again. Toni sighed to herself. The superintendent of the park worked there and Blade didn't want to be anywhere near him. He was not on good terms with him, and for good reason.

"There's plenty of cafes by the lakes." Toni suggested, "Why don't we go there. We can get an iced latte."

"Yeah, alright then. Sounds good." Blade nodded in agreement.

After rolling over to a clearing by the bank, they both started their engines and rotors. The two Agustawestlands took off over the lake and headed out further into the valley towards the nearest village.

The two Agustas reached the village of Pooley Bridge further into the valley. It was situated by the side of Ullswater lake with the River Eamont running into it from the mountains, with a bridge that crossed over it. By the lake's edge, a large cafe with a deck overlooking the river entering the lake. It was part of a small village, filled with tourists and locals alike. The roads and buildings were surrounded by low stone walls. There were pretty stone cottages, cafes, small shops, and a couple traditional English Inns. Every inch of the park was picturesque whatever the weather.

The two Agustawestlands entered the cafe by the lake, and ordered an afternoon tea for two; a jug of hot tea along with two large scones each with jam and cream. They parked up on the deck overlooking the river, sheltered underneath a large black parasol.

"You enjoying yourself, handsome?" Toni beamed at him. She could tell how happy Blade looked, and how much he was enjoying the moment.

"Wish I brought my shades now." He joked before sipping his drink, making Toni giggle. She then leaned into his side and looked at the landscape with a smile. Blade leaned his face against hers and did the same, sighing, contently.

They looked each other in the eyes after a moment and smiled. Toni got lost in Blade’s perfect, icy blue eyes, which stared back into her pure, emerald green eyes.

“I love you.” Toni said. Blade’s warm smile widened.

“I love you too. Very much.” He said in a low, soft tone. “The best thing about my life is you.”

Toni blushed. She giggled and closed her eyes, leaning into Blade again.

“Stop it you.” She said, still giggling. Blade chuckled and nuzzled her.

“Why? It’s the truth.” He said, letting the tip of his nose softly graze along Toni’s cheek.

“You charmer.” Toni mumbled.

"I know I am." Blade joked, grinning at her. Toni smiled at him again. Eventually Blade lowered his head again to finish off the rest of his cup of tea, downing the last half in one go.

"Thirsty?" Toni watched him. Blade glanced at her.

"Oh no, not at all. I was just trying to get rid of it." Blade replied, sarcastically. The two of them chuckled at his remark. Sarcasm was a part of their humour, innuendos and other sexual jokes was another.

After finishing their drinks and ordering another round of tea, they tried their scones. They got two each, which was more than enough. The scones were a little firm on the outside, but soft and spongy on the inside. The extra sides of jam and cream provided extra flavour. It was a very filling midday snack.

After spending an hour or so at the cafe, it was time to move on.

They rolled further down the street, exploring what was around them. Toni dragged Blade into a few of the shops to look what was inside. They then parked up on the bank of the lake to watch the scenery, which was way busier than the first, more secluded lake. Later, they retraced their path, passing the cafe again and crossing the bridge onto the other side of the river. The bank on this side was empty.

"You ready to go back home?" Blade asked Toni.

"Mhm." Toni nodded with a smile, "I had a really lovely day today."

"Me too. It was nice." Blade agreed with a smile. It was good to get out for a while for a change of scenery and explore the park, just the two of them. It wasn't often, but that just made the experience all the more special and exciting. The two Agustas took off from the bank before soaring over the lake and flying up V6 Valley back towards base, flying side by side.

Minutes later, the pair reached the Air Attack base. They each landed on a helipad on the taxiway close to the apron where the large hangars of the base were located. Dipper was standing at Maru’s workshop, talking to him. They looked over at Blade and Toni and watched them for a moment, smiling to themselves.

“Afternoon, you two!” Maru called out to them. Blade and Toni smiled at him.

“Afternoon, Maru.” Blade replied, calmly.

“Hey, sis!” Dipper called to Toni, happily.

“Hi giiirl!” Toni replied back, cheerily. Blade smirked.

“Did you two have a great day?” Maru asked them.

“Oh we did, thank you.” Toni replied. Blade looked down at her with a warm, soft smile, which Toni returned.

“It was perfect.” He added, nuzzling Toni, who leaned in against him with a smile.

“Awwww!” Dipper squeaked with excitement whilst Maru smiled at Blade and Toni, warmly. Blade then looked back up at Maru.

“Anything new whilst I’ve been away?” He asked him. Maru chuckled and shook his head.

“Nah, everything’s been good.”

Blade released a soft sigh of relief through his nose and nodded.

“Relax, Blade.” Maru told him. “You worry about this place too much.”

Blade lowered his gaze and narrowed his eyes, grumbling something. Toni giggled at him and nuzzled him again. He could be so stubborn when he wanted to.

“He’s right, darling.” She said to him in a soft voice, kissing Blade’s cheek.

"Mmmh" Blade grumbled again, making Toni giggle again.

"You're cute when you're grumpy." Toni smiled sweetly at him. Blade looked down at her and frowned.

"I'm not cute." He grumbled.

"Yes you are!" Toni replied, giving Blade a nudge.

"Hmpf." Blade huffed, making a little scowl.

"See? You're adorable!" Toni squeaked, giggling at him after. Maru and Dipper couldn't help but chuckle at them.

“Let’s just go back to our cabin.” Blade muttered.

“Awww. Is someone cranky?” Toni joked, smirking at him. Maru started laughing. Blade frowned even more and started growling.

“Sorry boss!” Maru apologised, still laughing. Toni chuckled and petted Blade's head with a rotor blade.

"Come on then, Grumpy." She said, cheerily, "I think someone's due a nap."

"I don't need a nap." Blade growled.

“Yes you do. You’re getting nowty.” Toni gently rubbed her nose against Blade’s cheek. Blade just scowled moodily at her, looking completely adorable.

The couple eventually left the apron and crossed the runway back to their hangar. They rolled up the slope onto the helipad together. Blade opened the hangar doors and stopped right in front of the entrance.

“Ladies first.” he said, giving Toni a gentle and warm smile as he motioned into the hangar. Toni smiled back at him.

“You charmer.” She said and gave Blade a kiss on the cheek, making Blade’s smile widen.

"You've been saying that a lot today." Blade joked. Toni chuckled.

“You’ve been a gentleman all day as well.” Toni returned whilst rolling into the cabin. Blade followed her. He approached Toni from behind and brushed his side against hers.

“Of course, for a beauty like you.” He said in a low tone before kissing Toni’s cheek. Toni smiled again and leaned into Blade, closing her eyes.

“Stop it, you.” She said. Blade smirked.

“Never.” He whispered against her side. Toni chuckled.

“Do you want a drink?” She asked after.

"Sure." Blade said with a nod.

"Good. I'll make us an iced latte then." Toni replied. She kissed Blade on the cheek before rolling over to the kitchen to make two drinks.

"Great. Thanks babe." Blade called to her. He rolled over to the open hangar doors and parked up. Stopping before the doors to stay in the shade whilst looking outside. Toni looked over at him with a smile before she started to make the drinks.

A short while later, Toni finished their drinks and took them over to Blade, putting one of them down right in front of him.

“There you go, sweetheart.” She said, kissing Blade’s cheek.

"Thank you, darling." Blade replied, nuzzling her back. The two of them sipped at their cool, refreshing iced lattes.

They leaned into each other's sides for a cuddle, watching the world go by from the doorway of their hangar. They had a quiet, peaceful day, just the two of them. It felt nice to be able to cut some slack and to relax until the next emergency...
