A fsjal thread was started on the beta forums of League of Legends (LOL) in August 2009. Google the word "fsjal" to see TONS of them!
I started painting my own versions of the champions and posting them under my in-game name, "Snuggler".
They are meant to be used as forum avatars. Feel free to use them for silly non-profit type things.
