Who's afraid of the Big, Bad Wolf?

She was running. Rubble turned under her bare feet, bruising the skin and making her already-short breaths catch in her chest with every footfall. She pushed the pain down, ignoring it. Worse if you’re caught. She almost missed the corner she needed and turned too sharply, cutting her foot on an errant shard of glass and slamming painfully into the wall, but she clawed her way into the narrow alley and shoved her bony frame past the rubble and debris. She felt something sting as It grabbed for her foot and missed, the whisper of a claw drawing yet another spot of blood. She didn’t stop to look as she pulled her feet in behind her, crawling and sliding and ducking her way through the barricades. It wouldn’t be able to follow her through here. It was too big. But she couldn’t stay here, either; here was full of kids, and while she could use it as a short-cut to put some distance between her and It, she couldn’t stay. She couldn’t risk the kids like that. “What in Odin’s name is that ?” The choking question from one of her companions wasn’t a strange one, in the circumstances; they’d all fought, bled, died and revived together many times now, and every victory simply gave new shapes to horrors they’d only previously seen in the distance. This was different, though. The first time they’d seen a Fuling, it was in the black forest, casually hamstringing the massive troll before killing it with a couple of well-placed blows. The ease it had dispatched the much larger opponent had shocked them all, and it had taken the whole group much longer than they thought it would to deal with this one small green creature. Past it’s corpse had been the plains, and the particular source of ‘what is that?’ had been the horrifyingly large insects that would run you through in one blow if you weren’t fast enough with your shield. She crept forward, placing bare feet down carefully between the twigs that littered the ground at the forest’s edge; the stag before her didn’t seem to have noticed her yet, and she was finally close enough for her poor attempt at a bow to do some damage. She took a knee carefully, and slowly lifted the bow, drawing back in a motion that was getting smoother with each hunt. She no longer winced at the slight creaks the wood and gut made as the tension increased, and as her fingertips touched her cheekbone, she let her breath out slowly. Her weight shifted. A twig she hadn’t noticed snapped under her knee. The stag didn’t even look back at her to find the noise, springing into action away from her. The sudden motion startled her as she released, and she yelled in frustration as her arrow went wide, lodging itself in a nearby tree, the force shattering the haft. Great. Down an arrow, with nothing to show for it. Her stomach rumbled, and she pushed herself to her feet

“Get up.” She winced; the sun filtering through the trees was painfully bright, and she put up a hand to block it out. “Odin’s finest, indeed! Get up!” She tried to answer the rough voice, but her tongue felt slow, her head heavy, and a sharp pain started to make itself known just under her shoulder. A rock? She twisted, and felt the pebble dislodge, relieving the pressure. Why am I lying on a rock? “Get up, before I decide your eyes are worth more to me than they are to you!” The voice was harsh, and came from somewhere to her left. She rolled, heaving herself to her knees, ready to fight off… something, when - “If you come anywhere near my eyes, I’ll wring your fluffy little neck, crow.” A gruff voice sounded just ahead of her, and through her squinting eyes she caught a glimpse of a hand, leaning on the ground in front of her.
