During a time lost to legend in the Edo period of Japan, trouble began to arise. It all began when a sickness overtook the imperial family. Strangely enough, it only affected them, causing the emperor, empress, and princes all to fall incredibly ill. Those around them thought it was a curse sent by the gods themselves. As his children succumbed to the blight, the emperor began to grow more and more worried about the lineage and stability of the empire’s future. Days before his death, however, he received miraculous news: A single daughter of his had survived. That daughter was the youngest, eighteen years old, Princess Kiyoko. She had shown recovery from the blight, but had not recovered physically at all. Her skin had grown pale, she had grown terribly thin, and her hair raggedy as well.
