Description
A pair of Tapinocephalus atherstonei. It lived in what is now the Karoo, South Africa, during the Middle to late Permian. It is the namesake for the ‘Tapinocephalus Assemblage zone’, hence the name. It falls under the iconic Beaufort group of the Karoo Supergroup. Tapinocephalus is arguably the most “average skulled” dinocephalian, as next to Moschops it is rather “passive” looking. This may be partly due to the domed forehead, making its skull look far less slanted and awkward compared to its relatives!
A tanky, herbivorous Dinocephalian, Tapinocephalus probably occupied a niche similar to large browsing fauna of modern South Africa.

dinocephalians are really underrated :
you have coverage of basal pelicosaurs like dimetrodon and edaphosaurus ,
and of late synapsids during the permian mass extinction , gorgonopsids therocephalians and dicinodonts ...
we don't have documentaries about the therocephalians ...
