Major Arcana: XIV. the Temperance
Allows the user to return the last attack that they sustained to their attacker. Depending on what the attack was, the cooldown time changes. Should the last attack have been made by a Major Arcana, the cooldown time is two weeks.
Fighting Style:
Fang uses a stylised jian, and carries around a short sword as a side arm. His blade holsters can be fixed together, allowing him to carry both swords on the same side. He usually fights with just his jian, but if pushed to a corner, will whip out his short sword to fight back with a double blade irregular style. He’s not as proficient in the double blade style as he is with his single blade style, however.
Due to the nature of his jian, Fang is particularly well suited to adding sneak attacks into his fighting style. As a result of being practiced with such attacks, as long as he still maintains some form of situational awareness, it is difficult to catch him by an attack from behind, giving him something of an edge in battles where he faces more than one opponent. Fang incorporates both swordplay and martial arts into his fights, which gives him cause to travel, instead of putting up shields - magical or otherwise. Seeing him spellcast with his bare hands isn’t an uncommon sight, but it is his preference not to engage in a magic battle unless necessary.
Fang is capable of combining elemental magic with swordplay. The most noticeable form is when he uses an element (usually water) to lengthen his short sword. This can be combined with his jian in his other hand to use a regular double blade style, with minimal lag time between both hands. The element of his affinity - which he chose to specialise in - is water, which would theoretically give him an edge when fighting in wet environments.
In accordance with his stat distribution and his Major Arcana, Fang greatly favours a high intensity, high damage, physical battle. This is often paired with high speeds and some magic, should it prove necessary. He is an acceptable fighter if forced into an endurance match.
Fang rarely - if ever - uses his Major Arcana, preferring to save it for emergencies. He is more likely to use it when fulfilling his duty of protecting the King, or when he is critically wounded by a single strike. This has the tendency to force a much shorter battle, with both sides competing to see who can endure the most pain and injuries. Think of it as his ‘trump card’, albeit a hidden ace that could potentially cause grievous harm to both the caster and the receiver.
Personal
Personality:
( + ) Responsible | Loyal | Disciplined
( = ) Serious | Practical
( ~ ) Unforgiving | Pessimistic | Stubborn
Fang is a very traditional person, who sticks to his beliefs and ideals. He is serious, especially when doing his duty or when in a battle, for he believes that only when serious can one fulfill their duties to the best of their abilities. He has a preference for planning, especially favouring solid and realistic plans that can be implemented. While not on a genius level of intelligence, Fang’s capabilities come from his experiences and training - he learns from observation and mistakes, which enables him to achieve based on experience and expertise.
Despite having a solid and far-seeing view of matters, Fang can be stubborn. This causes him to have a difficult time accepting different perspectives from others that stray too far from his own. This does not mean that he cannot understand them, however. Should an alternative theory be forced upon him, he may try to push his own views back with increased aggression. This can be considered determination, to some extent, but it makes him rather pushy on matters that he refuses to compromise on.
His experiences make up a huge part of who he is. His loyalty, pessimism, cold unforgiveness and other traits all stem from his past experiences, most of which he cannot let go of, or even forgive. Rarely does he mention them, but it’s quite noticeable to those who know him well, and know what to look out for. This issue makes itself known by restricting him in various aspects of life, giving the impression that he is a callous man.
Still, he cares a lot for the people he considers family, and it shows in his interactions. He’s less guarded around them, smiles more often, and would be willing to drop everything at a moment’s notice for them. Those close to him would see a different side of Fang, a side hidden beneath the carefully crafted impersonal exterior. Beneath the confident mask, Fang is gentle and occasionally playful, along with a side of insecurity. He is concerned, caring and loyal - and a goofball, to some extent. It should also be noted that Fang can be quite a dense person, especially when it concerns matters regarding himself.
Fang generally refrains from speaking about his family life. Work and home life shouldn’t mix, in his opinion, but due to the nature of his job, everything is a security concern. Protecting the King is no easy feat, and so as to prevent any possibility of him being unable to do his job due to his family being threatened, Fang mitigates the issue by simply keeping his silence.
Born to a humble blacksmith and his wife living in the outskirts of Xùhánglì, Fang was an average child. Curious around the forge where his father worked, choosing to explore the city instead of running out to play - these activities kept him away from most other children his age. But he didn’t mind. If he could learn something new, it was more than enough.
His family made just enough to get by each year, by forging weapons and jewelry as well as opening up repair work. Members of the civilian army often dropped by to get their blades sharpened or to commission new blades, and were often dinner guests at the house. Their tales of adventures and life in the military were a welcome entertainment in the household, but never did Fang think that he would join the military.
Still, everything changed once he was of age to attend junior school. Fang was torn. On one hand, he qualified to attend the Royal Institute - the most prestigious school in the kingdom, and one that practically guaranteed everyone who graduated a position within the Imperial Army - but on the other hand, what would happen to his parents if he left? It took quite some convincing, but his parents eventually bade him go. See the different sights that the kingdom had to offer, they coaxed. Fang accepted the invitation to the Institute, where he would spend the next five years, assuming he wasn’t expelled.
The Institute was quite the eye-opener. It was well known that in the army, recruits were broken and built up again, as battle-hardened soldiers. However, Fang was average in everything. With such a large talent pool, there wasn’t enough to let him stand out. Still, he practiced hard, getting by with hard work instead of talent. Joining the Army was a stable career. If he could succeed at this, then he could help his family out that much more.
His first and second years went terribly. Thankfully, he met a helpful senior who, when he was able, helped him out every now and then - at least until he learnt to take care of himself. It was in his third year, after much observation and research, that Fang decided to finally expand his sword fighting skills. Fang would settle for a short sword and regular sword combination, but that idea got him thinking. Since he was already deviating from the general style, why not go for broke and try out an orthodox style?
Over the next holiday, Fang spent time in his father’s forge, learning how to make swords - then learning how to customise them, and imbue the blade with magic. Zhan Lu - his signature blade - was crafted in that very forge, designed and forged by him. With the reversible nature of the blade, Fang was able to climb up the academic rank, gaining both admirers and haters along the way. He chose not to take revenge on the other students, but began to carry around his sword for ‘insurance’. He grew out his hair to match his change in rank, only to tie it up in a bun when it became apparent that his fellow schoolmates were not above yanking on his braid in order to gain an advantage in fights. Still, his hard work paid off - he graduated with top honours, inheriting the position which his senior had graduated with.
The Institute looked only at biological genders, which gave Fang a pretty difficult time. The army too, would be the same. In celebration of his graduation and a temporary freedom before yet a whole many more constricting years of being male, Fang decided to go out to drink. Dressing up as a female, he made his way to a bar, where he was joined not long after by a young man. They made idle conversation, and Fang was grateful that the other didn’t try to hit on him - seriously, the number of people who tried that was astounding - and they parted ways civilly. To his immense shock (and horror), he would recognise the young man as the King of Luanzi the very next day, when said young man chose him to be his personal knight.
To say that Fang was horrified would be an understatement, but he fulfilled his job impersonally. This was an expected gift horse, and he couldn’t simply overlook it just like that. Still, the more time he spent around the King, the more he realised that the gap between the noble aristocracy and the common folk wasn’t so large. It was widened by the perceptions of the two broad classes, but beneath all that? They were human all the same. Huang, to him, was a very good friend - or as much a friend as a King could be. To him, there would always be a divide that couldn’t be breached. Not by a commoner. But of course, it helped that they both learnt quite a bit about each other, after spending a fair amount of time together.
After the initial meeting of the Kings at Aletheia - and the promise of a tentative peace, Fang followed King Huang to Aletheia in order to train in the field of magic, where he would further develop his sword style by adding in a more advanced element of magic. He currently has a general control over the elements, with a specialisation in his affinity of water magic. Fang has also some minor healing spells in his repertoire as a precaution.
