A Tale as Old as the NES

On Twitter there was a trend of redrawing NES Sprite Princess Toadstool. I decided to make this after being inspired by this particular version by Rariatoo:

But that’s as far as the inspiration goes. Everything else is original. The idea to include Mario leading the Princess to freedom was something I really wanted to see, so I included the “end” of the castle, leading towards the Mushroom Kingdom.

The idea of solely using a limited color palette to covey space, shapes, and depth was so intriguing. As you may know, I love experimenting with different styles all the time. Of course, I focused more on composition than accuracy in shadows, and it paid off.
