It was absolutely so fun to work on this piece as I often don't experiment with perspective or light. I'm s0000 happy with how this piece came 0ut! Ok, now for her bio:
🌞BIO
Belladonna is a laid-back witch, whose powers are derived from the Sun and, when she wishes, the Moon. This might seem confusing at first as she is a Night Witch; however, her ancestors,
a small group of Night Witches, lived at the North and South Poles, where there were days of only night or only day. They found that, on a day when the Sun never set, they could even harness the Sun's power, not just the Moon's. Over time, her ancestors came to fav0r the Sun's power over the Moon's, and, as a result, they were both revered and hated for their access to the Sun's power.
I’m glad to hear you were experimenting with perspective and light because I’ve got some points to discuss in that regard. You were entirely successful in making the character’s foot look closer than the rest of their body, but to a point where I’m lost on the proportions. The foot and arm appear a little too big, while the background arm becomes slightly too small. You’ll develop an eye for this with more practice, until you can recognize in the early sketching stages whether you’re feeling good about the proportions. Next, if the light source is in fact that large sun behind them, the shadow would barely be on the character at this angle. At best we’d see the shadows of the umbrella pole and character stretching off to the lower left. But I like how you’re playing with light and shadow on the character’s skin, which is also thematically perfect for them, so I would suggest removing the sun entirely from the background and then the audience knows the sun is out of sight high above based on the shadow. Finally, an element which I think is important would be the depth and 3D feel of a piece. The umbrella feels far too flat against the background, which could be improved with a slight perspective shift or by angling the umbrella to see some of the underside. I’m pretty sure fishnet stockings would cover the foot instead of how each toe here has a nylon sheath to fit into. Also the under brim of the character’s hat only looks like a gray circle which the character’s head is clipping through, so some texture details in there would help sell the inside of that hat. And … that’s all the critique I have! You’ve got a fun character here with an interesting beach goth vibe, so keep practicing with them!
