Yngirheim, Ultima Segmentum Trooper Midkiff trudged through the clean white snow, pulse rifle in her hands. The wind howled, slamming into her tiny frame like a thousand knives. The overalls beneath her blue-grey combat armour trapped just enough heat to stop her muscles freezing up. By the path, she missed the blistering desert heat of Sa’cea. At the top of the ridge, she found a pair of the strange blue-green pine-trees native to the planet Yngirheim. Crouching between the trees, she raised the rectangular rifle to her shoulder and looked through the scope into a shallow gorge below. Finger off the trigger, she reminded herself. No mistakes. Not like last time. Two cliffs faced each other across the gorge, no doubt carved by a river back when this frozen world still had liquid water. Between the two cliffs stood an island of dark grey stone. Between the island and the opposing cliffs, Midkiff spotted something moving, something big, blue and gold. Midkiff keyed her radio: ‘Eagle

Life is something you do between naps - You’ve been asleep for a long time, 14 billion years in fact. Before then time didn’t exist, it’s weird I know. - One day you woke up as a sperm and raced for an egg. Out of the millions of sperm who raced that day, you won. - Your prize is a stay here on planet earth. Here you will be awake on and off for a while, then you’ll go back to sleep again for good. - During your stay, good things and bad things will happen. Enjoy the good things, endure the bad things. - Remember we are all going back to sleep someday. Why not be nice to each other in the meantime?

Solarpunk is a movement in speculative fiction, art, fashion, and activism that seeks to answer and embody the question “what does a sustainable civilization look like, and how can we get there?” The aesthetics of solarpunk merge the practical with the beautiful, the well-designed with the green and lush, the bright and colorful with the earthy and solid. Solarpunk can be utopian, just optimistic, or concerned with the struggles en route to a better world ,  but never dystopian. As our world roils with calamity, we need solutions, not only warnings. Solutions to thrive without fossil fuels, to equitably manage real scarcity and share in abundance instead of supporting false scarcity and false abundance, to be kinder to each other and to the planet we share. Solarpunk is at once a vision of the future, a thoughtful provocation, a way of living and a set of achievable proposals to get there.
