One of the nicest and friendliest artists I've ever met, ArtisticAIGalaxy, has been interviewing synthographers lately. This is our first interview together, where I talk about work, faith, and the medium. What first drew you to synthography, and how did your journey with digital art begin? I’ve always been something of a rascal online. On top of ancient message boards no one cares about, I’ve been banned from over 50 telegram groups, 25 discords, and before Mr. Musk freed the captives on Twitter, I was on multiple blocklists. I rarely swear, I don’t post obscene materials, and I don’t try to hurt anyone. But I’m a Christian, and I love provoking secular people with flippant humor, especially if they’re in charge of these places. I also love debating them on spiritual topics, which runs a little too deep for most people. I usually try to evangelize before I start making connections, which isn’t always wise, because people label you instantly. But it’s true to myself. How is this

I can safely say the problems I enountered with my generator have been resolved. I'm using prompts that focus on the behavior of subjects, to get more natural poses and interactions, so it's not just bull terriers standing around. Hope you're enjoying the Friendship Studies. They're a lot of fun to make. : ) --BT

Visitors and fans may have noticed a decrease in output lately. This is not due to changes in my life, but changes in the dataset used to train the generator I work with. It's now strictly to make avatars for social media, and little else. It still delivers on setting, lighting and technique, but the images lack the dynamism and energy my audience has come to expect. Poses showing affection are very tepid, and the facial expressions are less nuanced and human than before. Everything has a forced, manufactured look to it, as though the algorithm is going with literal takes on my prompts. I've been trying to find workarounds to this problem, but the process is slow and involves discarding many pieces, which simply aren't up to the standard I hold myself to. The Bro Terrier collection is, I think, one of the most shocking art exhibits I've ever witnessed. It's led me to be accused of crimes (art theft, etc.), reshaped who I socialize with, and branded me insane. I can endure all these

Yesterday, I created a new series of abstract works called Studies in Binary. They're artworks where binary code has been typed into the generator, resulting in powerfully detailed compositions. I'm not sure why this happens, but Stable Diffusion seems to associate binary code with the sun, the moon, God, and the human eye. Even if the AI is trained on human or animal models, these motifs are always present. It also displays textures too complex for my upscaler software to redraw, as though the textures have no earthly equivalent. Given the "black box" nature of AI programs, there's no way to know why it renders binary code this way. When it assigns a human or animal subject to the prompts, they're usually feminine (even if male), highly symmetrical, and the color gold is frequently used. Some experiments with DALL-E 4 (Microsoft Copilot) were similar, though more concrete. I'll post these down the road, but in some cases, more than just zeroes and ones were displayed. They showed

The absence of a US copyright law for AI art does not mean your work isn't protected. There are two kinds of AI art: the one trained on specific artwork drawn by the artist, using a LoRA, and the one trained on works from various artists across a website or search engine. In the first case, the work completely belongs to you, because your character is the source, whether using LoRAs or prompts. In the second, the work still belongs to you under the principles of fair use, though its authorship may be contested if you sell the work. In each case, you've still made something unique, even if derivative. Using references in a transformative way isn't illegal. Otherwise, Marilyn Monroe's estate could have sued Andy Warhol decades ago. AI art is not illegal. The EU is trying to make it a fineable offense, but all this will do is drive up the price of AI art to cover the fines. Also you can bet Euro corporations will continue making it, without facing repercussions. Don't let anyone

Some artists deliver characters so bewitching, you could look at them for days. umhiiri's submission, fl0w3y, is of one such character. She's sizing you up, taking you in, adorned with emblems that may or may not define her tastes. She could be wearing them ironically, after all. Maybe that orange soda is hers. Maybe it was there when she got there. Who do the flowers belong to? Who knows? Who cares? You've piqued her interest. She's not quite sure about you, but she'll be damned if she makes it look that way. Congratulations, umhiiri. Enjoy your free month of Core membership. :) --BroTerrier

If you're an AI artist and you're being mistreated for it, don't be discouraged. Whatever the merits or defects of your work, you have every right to make collages out of prompts. Nobody can take this from you. If you think mistreating AI artists will win others over to your side, you are wrong. Only those who feel threatened by what AI can do, due to their lack of skill, harbor this grudge. The good artists who dislike AI are simply misinformed, or pressured into silence by the crowd. Keep making AI art. You are loved. --Bro Terrier
