Description
Space Harrier is a 1985 arcade game by Sega where you control the character, Harrier, as he runs his way through 18 (including bonus rounds) levels shooting bizarre and surreal creatures. The game was developed by Yu Suzuki as a way to push their 16-bit hardware and the design philosophy for the arcade machines themselves forward after their previous game, Hang-On. The development behind this game is quite intriguing, the concept was initially going to have a fighter jet. After all, the word "Harrier" comes from a jet of the same name. Due to how taxing it was on the hardware's memory, it was then changed to a human character instead, as it was relatively simpler to make. I think the most interesting thing about development was how Suzuki would use a button that would switch the colors around on-screen whenever Sega president would show up, this gave the game an unfinished look and bought them more time to flesh the game out. That's pretty epic if you ask me.
Enough nerd talk, here's a piece of fanart I made where Harrier is shooting a beam at Squilla, the first boss of the game. Enjoy!
