Description
"And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul..."
...These words come to my mind nearly every time I look at Drosselmeyer. What a strong, loving Godfather Creature he is.
And the piece is an illustration to my still-being-written fanfic about him, "Heart of the Wizard".
Yes, that's a mirror on his chest; it had grown into him and holds the once-broken ribcage together since.
Yes, he is smooth like a Ken doll, because one of the conditions of his returning to life (besides fiery magic within) was getting a semi-fabric body - these aren't drawers on him, that's actual silk that will be his new skin. (Here it's white, as the idea came a bit later, but I'm thinking of making it flesh-colored later.)
As for the spun-glass wig - it's just there so he'd resemble a willow more. "Weide" ("Willow") is Christian's childhood nickname, hence the magic forming willow twigs everywhere.
The "Tale of the Nutcracker" by Alexander Dumas has its own vesrion of how he got his eyepatch and wig - less mystical, but just as worth compassion. In my version, the clockmaker also got a mirror above his heart, and a neverending, ticking song within it. The one who wished him death, and crashed straight into his chest to finish him for sure, had burnt themselves. The ones who saved him afterwards, couldn't help him any other way than changing his nature almost entirely. Sadly, his hair and eye are now lost forever, but the gift of magic (as well as Martha's love, and being a godfather of the Stahlbaum children later) is hopefully worth it. And that's so much I can reveal for now.
Truth be told, I'm rather happy how the piece turned out - except maybe for the blue twigs outside the "cocoon", which got almost eaten up by scanner. Ah well. I aimed for the glow, anyway.

Gouaches (90%), pearlescent watercolors, 10% watercolor + plain color pencils, toned blue paper.
Christian Elias Drosselmeyer (c) E. T. A. Hoffmann (character) and Lacewood Productions (appearance); all headcanons created for the fanfic "Heart of the Wizard" are (c) me.

Still as impressive as I remember it.
