Description
"Oooooh. Hello, little guy."
Pic for Disney-club's March of Mice contest.
It's Megavolt from Darkwing Duck and Roquefort from the Aristocats. The room's from the Darkwing Duck episode "A Revolution in Home Appliances" (Megavolt's apartment), and the cracker is supposed to look like the one Roquefort eats in the Aristocats. (contest bonus for location and object)
Screenshot refs for the room and the characters. Also a few refs I took of myself on the floor offering a cookie to a little candle (one photo in particular ended up with interesting lighting, so I tried to (very quickly) mimic that lighting, but I didn't have time to adjust the contrast and get it perfect).
When the contest journal first came up, I immediately had an idea of drawing Megavolt on the floor looking at a little mouse (perhaps one of Cinderella's, and Megavolt giving him a little piece of cheese—I later decided on Roquefort and a cracker). I thought that'd be neat, with an anthropomorphic mouse and a normal mouse. I imagined Megavolt being intrigued by the little visitor and being really friendly (maybe I'd thought of that because of how he treats his little light bulbs).
But, when I first tried making a sketch on the first, it wasn't turning out right, and I didn't do anything for three weeks. I figured I needed to see the pose, and wasn't sure how best to do that. But, with the deadline approaching, I tried another sketch, which turned out looking okay, and then took some photos of myself on the floor for reference for the final pic.
For the lineart, I went with the custom brush I'd recently made. For coloring... I had thought of trying cell-shading for it, but switched in the middle of shading his yellow shirt/suit. I did the shading for the pic super quick, and most of the details were spur-of-the-moment (eg: What if I add some lines to the metal on his chest like some fancy metal objects have? What if I add scratch marks to his helmet prongs? What if I try adding some texture to the cracker?).

LOL; I loved that show as a kid. Great work as always. How have ya been? Would you ever do one of any of the Rescue Rangers, just out of curiosity? Again, very nice. Hope life is treating you right!
