White Rock spinosaurid

Description

Completed a few weeks ago, I had the privilege of creating the press artwork for the recently announced 'White Rock spinosaurid'. On this project I collaborated with Ph.D student Christopher Barker and Dr Neil Gostling. Going by just a few fragments of fossil material from the Vectis Formation, it is presumed to have exceeded 10 metres in length and may even have been the largest predatory dinosaur discovered in Europe. This spinosaurid would have roamed what is now the Isle of Wight (and probably many other areas) some 125 million years ago. There is a great article by Dr Darren Naish on this specimen: tetzoo.com/blog/2022/6/8/giant…

I might have made it a bit chunky and small armed for a more baryonychine spinosaurid, but one thing we wanted to convey was sheer size and mass of the animal. We decided to add a few scattering Istiodactylus to help convey this, along with a few weary Iguanodon in the distance.
