Description
WARNING: This post contains bad Celtic art and an angry polar bear.
Okay, I know I said I would be taking a break from DeviantArt, but this idea popped into my head while I was walking around West London yesterday. It was a wonderful moment, like the time J.K Rowling claimed she thought of Harry Potter and all its characters during one train ride even though I seriously doubt it.
BEHOLD THE IRISH-CANADIAN UNION.
It didn't take me long to think of emblem. After all, both countries best known symbols are leaves. I took the Maple and Shamrock leaves, mashed them together and voila.
I assume that a hypothetical union between Canada and Ireland would be one of a federation, in other words both sides would have the same amount of autonomy, somewhat similar to the USA or Switzerland. Or perhaps Ireland would join Canada and become a province like Ontario. I dunno....
Whatever the case, six of the flags I have created are of equal proportions with regards to the Irish and the Canadians. For the top two designs there are separate versions with blue and orange colours to represent the French minority (particularly in Quebec) and the Irish Protestant minority (such as in Ulster).
In the third row I made two flags with equal proportions for all four (Canada, Ireland, French Canada and Ulster), but the emblem still remains.
And finally on the bottom row are flags of a more colonial edge. For the Canadian rule flag, I added the Maple Leaf flag as a canton to a green field bearing a high Celtic cross. The Irish rule flag is vice versa, except there is a rather outraged polar bear.
This work saw my first attempt at making Celtic patterns. And to tell you the truth, I didn't enjoy it. The smallest pattern took me half and hour to do, and it was just a line art! The Greek Maeander pattern I made in the Flags of Athens was easier. The Celtic one was just tedious and pure hell for me, and I am sincerely in awe at the professionals who can execute such patterns without effort. It is safe to say I will not be attempting another of these any time soon.
As for the bear, it dawned on me that I never drew a real one before (I did one of my childhood teddy bear back in 2014). I just used a combination of lines, curves and linear drawing to make the polar bear you see here.
So there it is, eight flags representing a hypothetical union of Canada and Ireland. Leave a comment of your opinion and criticism.
Okay I can take a break now. See you later.
P.S. Just so you know, there are no black lines running down the middle of my flags. The stupid resolution makes it appear so.
