- 8: A Tale of Lealty -
Designed by prince-corvidae, art by Alkemistry.
Species: Vargr
Said to be a descendent of one of Grima's warband; his sworn blood brothers – some actually believe this Vargr to be his ancestor’s reincarnation. He is the Jarl of one of the larger Vargr circles and a highly respected warrior, much like his predecessor. Even as a child, he was said to be a prodigy and was regarded as an omen by the pineseers – a sign of Grima’s nearing return. Though he had a rebellious streak, one that his tired father tried his best to suppress. Some days, instead of training, he would sneak out of the dark woods and spy on a nearby Capry village. There was a large noble estate at the far end of the village – nearest to the forest, whose grand gardens he liked to steal into. On hot summer days he’d steal fruit from their trees or in Spring, drink from the honeysuckle buds. On one such morning, he encountered another child around his age – a Capry but sweet, unlike what his father had warned.
The pair became fast friends, playing in the garden every other day or so – whenever he could dodge his father long enough to visit. She smuggled him books to read and fancy pastries or cheese – while he told tales of the Vargr and made her braided bracelets or brought arcane plants from within the woods. But like all good things, their secret meetings had to come to an end. A few years into their friendship, the girl’s father caught them talking – tossing a ball to each other over the garden hedge. Enraged and afraid, he chased the Vargr off – nearly having him killed by his guards’ arrows.
Stubborn and ornery, the Vargr boy didn’t give up. He continued to sneak her gifts and letters over the years, this time using a trained hawk to deliver them. When his circle had to move west – away from her village, he kept her informed and arranged another meeting near their new camp. They’d made lodging not too far from the girl’s close friend’s estate in a neighboring county and she believed that perhaps, with her father’s guard down, she might have a moment to meet.
Unfortunately, fate was not on the pair’s side. She never arrived and when he finally dared searching the nearby roads for her — he found only the corpse of her faithful horse and torn, bloody saddle laden down with her bags. They’d been rifled through and his letter to her removed – torn down the middle by bloody hands.
Enraged, he assumed the worst. The church had done this – perhaps her father had told, hoping that a priest might help her repent. Instead they had murdered her, just as the faceless knight had once slaughtered the Vargr on behalf of the “kindly” Archwarden. The newly-made Jarl had returned to his circle in a rage – gathering up all his warband in a fury that could not be quenched without blood.
They found nothing but a single, bloody bell. Disheartened, he returned to his village and committed to his duty — hoping that by being a strong Jarl, in leading his people, that perhaps Grima would return sooner. Then surely, they’d all have their revenge.
But someday that summer, in the peak of it’s sweltering heat — a shadowy figure came to him in the form of a suited man. He gave him a mirrored shard and spoke words his heart sung to hear — of revenge and death, in the name of his dear friend. The church –no, the Archwarden would die at his hand. That he was sure of.
And when his form twisted and melded with his fury and the cool, nothingness of the man’s shadow — he finally felt at peace.
