Description

MyPaint / GIMP Process : Rachel Hurd Wood - Steps

Medium : Digital Painting
Software : MyPaint, Gimp 2.6

A very quick overview of my process when painting my latest portrait.

Step 1 : Sketch
I still sketch with Gimp because it allows me to make corrections very efficiently. Free transform, resizing and rotating selections are very useful tools to correct any mistakes before going into details :) I'm mainly focusing on getting the volume, structure, and perspective correct.
Time : About 1 hour

Step 2 : Underpainting Also known as block-in. For me, the aim is to set up the basic colours to see whether they work well or not, as well as the basic values (roughly indicating light & shadows). This will serve as a solid base to be painted over in the last step. I switched to MyPaint for this step and used the watercolours brushes because I think those are great to lay down things very quickly.
Time : About 2/3 hours

Step 3 : Overpainting Also known as rendering. Basically, painting over each part of the drawing with the final colours. This time I also add details and suggest texture (such as hairy texture or iris texture). Used MyPaint too, with basic round brushes. I also used the sponge preset to smudge (only as a finishing touch; don't abuse it).
Time : Remaining 7/8 hours (half of them for the hair :XD: )
