Floating through island

audience is forced to move around the sculptural forms as if moving around the islands of japan.

Chihuly's installation presents the audeince with a disarming representation of the raw often violent natural forces that have shaped the earth, particularly those volcanic- we can sense the intense subterranean heat and pressure that can fuse silicon into glass and which wells below the japanese island from whic the installation derives it's name. Indeed Cihuly's chosen primary material (glass) connects the audience to those formative processes, linking theme and media. The artmaking practise of Andy Goldsworthy immediately springs to mind because he explores similar natural cycles in works such as "rock cones" and "pebbles broken and scraped". But "Nijima Flats" also impresses with scale in a way not dissimiliar to the unsettling size of a Ron 



still life emerged in nertherland [1600s] because the kelvinist church took over the catholic church and they forbit religious imagery. 1600s saw the emergence of merchant class people who had lots of money and wanted to buy lots of stuff.


still life was an allusion of the real world. the more convincing the allusion, the more popular the artist.
