Description
One hundred and forty-seven million years ago, in what is now Colorado, a Female Ceratosaurus tucks in to her meal. This was her first successful hunt in weeks, and she has managed to bring down a bull Camptosaurus. This meal will sustain her for many days...
My second Ceratosaurus piece, this time based on a skeletal mount from the Natural History Museum of Utah. Ceratosaurus is my favorite Jurassic Theropod because of how much of an underdog it tends to be represented as. Unfortunately in shows like Jurassic Fight Club it is depicted as nothing more than fodder for Allosaurus to kill, but this is a simplistic view of nature and complex ecosystems. Just because a predator is bigger, doesn't make it a ruler over all around it. Ceratosaurus was a formidable predator in its own right, and modern ecosystems today indicate that various predators can share the same general area without always coming into direct competition with one another. In Africa, there are lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and various other large carnivores, and that would have been much like the upper Jurassic in North America. Of course in a straight fight a singular Ceratosaur would be no match for an Allosaurus, much like a single Hyena doesn't stand much chance against a single lion, but one lion and four Hyenas...anyway, that's the end of my rant. Hope you enjoy this remarkable evolutionary wonder, Ceratosaurus.
As far as some speculative design goes, if you note I give my Ceratosaurs (including the other in my gallery) horizontal slit pupils. Now, I understand that this is an evolutionary adaptation usually shared by herbivorous animals, but evolution isn't guided and there aren't dictated rules stating that only herbivores can have this. Horizontal pupils allow an animal to have panoramic vision of the ground to help spot potential predators. Ceratosaurus was a large carnivore, but with animals like Allosaurus and Saurophaganax living along with it, it would have to watch out for these larger potential bullies. With an eye adaptation like this it would be more likely to spot danger and prepare itself accordingly.
