The Lesvos Petrified Forest was formed around 20 million years ago. Today there is a Natural History Museum at the site. I don’t know how much of the fossilized remains that could be seen in ancient times, but according to The First Fossil Hunters by Adrienne Mayor, the Greeks were fascinated by marine, plant, and mammal fossils and used them as ornaments, relics, and votive offerings. The natural philosopher Theophrastus, who came from Lesbos, is believed to have discussed plant fossils in his lost work On Petrifactions.
