The Province of Cienfuegos is located in the southern center of Cuba, the city is known as La Perla del Sur or the Beautiful City of the Sea. It occupies a total area of 4180.02 km² and its population is 407,244 inhabitants and the municipality of Cienfuegos 177,113 inhabitants.
Since 2005, its historic center holds the category of cultural heritage of humanity for being an example of hygiene, order and modernity of the cities founded in Latin America in the 19th century. It is the only city in Cuba founded by French settlers under the Spanish crown. The name of Cienfuegos is due to Don José Cienfuegos Jovellanos, captain general of the Island at the time of its foundation as a town (1829).
