Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance protects drivers from the financial impact of causing injury or death in a motor vehicle accident anywhere in Australia.
In South Australia, you pay for CTP insurance when you renew a vehicle's registration. Find out more about purchasing CTP.
If you have been injured in a motor vehicle accident, find out more about the claims process and what's covered in a CTP claim.
What is not covered?
CTP insurance does not cover:
- Any damage to vehicles or property
- A driver who was entirely responsible for causing an accident*
- Accidents not caused by anyone's fault.*
*People under 16 at the time of the accident are covered, even if they caused the accident, or if it wasn't caused by anyone. Read our Children's CTP claims fact sheet for more information.
Policy of Insurance
CTP insurance covers you under a Policy of Insurance. The terms of the Policy are set by the CTP Regulator. The Policy is the same for every South Australian vehicle, and cannot be changed by CTP Insurers.
Read the CTP Policy of Insurance.
If you don't comply with the Policy, and you cause an accident where somebody is injured or killed, your CTP Insurer may recover the cost of any resulting CTP claims from you.
For example, you do not comply with the Policy if you:
- Drink or drug-drive
- Drive dangerously
- Intentionally cause injury
- Drive a vehicle without the owner’s permission
- Drive without a current driver’s licence
- Drive an unroadworthy or overloaded vehicle
- Don't stop after being involved in an accident where somebody was injured or killed (hit and run).
