A chassis trailer refers to a specific type of trailer or undercarriage designed for transporting ocean containers on the road. They may also be called an intermodal chassis or container chassis. For overweight FCL shipments by truck, a tri-axle chassis is typically used.
A trailer chassis only is a sturdy steel frame equipped with axles, tires, and a brake system. It is used to transport containers between ports, warehouses, shipping facilities, or container depots, much like a semi-trailer. The trailer chassis relies on a motor carrier, resembling a truck, to move it around efficiently.
A tri-axle chassis is best for transporting heavier containers, weighing over 36,000 pounds for 20ft or over 44,000 pounds for 40ft containers. In contrast, a regular or standard chassis with two axles can handle containers within standard weight limits. If your containers exceed weight limits in your logistics plan, opt for a tri-axle chassis for better load capacity and stability. Weight limits for chassis may vary by state.
