What's the Story?
CANTICOS is a bilingual children's animated series inspired by Spanish-language nursery rhymes. From popular songs like "Los pollitos" ("Little Chickens") to rhymes like "Itsy Bitsy Spider" ("La araña chiquita"), young viewers are invited to watch the characters featured in the poem while singing along in English and Spanish. Each nursery rhyme is completely sung in English by an offscreen narrator, and then immediately followed by a replay of events while it is sung in Spanish. Key words in both languages are highlighted throughout. In between songs, brief observations from the narrator, and the reactions from an offscreen children's audience, are audible in both languages.
Is It Any Good?
These colorful 3D animated music videos, based on the songs and characters from the Canticos brand, offer a fun way to teach kids words and phrases in two languages. Each nursery rhyme is performed at a pace that allows preschoolers to follow along in both languages.
Canticos is a cultural celebration of the songs and stories many Latino children have grown up with over the years. However, it also serves as an early introduction to bilingual education, and offers young children the opportunity to learn and/or retain two languages, regardless of their cultural background.
