What's the Story?
ALMA GOES TO PUERTO RICO is a special episode of Alma's Way. Alma and her family travel to Puerto Rico to celebrate her Bisabuela (great-grandmother)'s 100th birthday. She visits her extended family and gets to see all of the things that make Puerto Rico special. In the first part of the special, Alma flies to Puerto Rico and her family takes her to see all the sights. She finds a bomba dancing skirt, and has to use her problem-solving skills to track down the skirt's owner. In the second part of the special, Alma is trying to figure out the perfect present to give her Bisabuela on her special 100th birthday. She realizes that her poetry-loving Bisabuela would love a special rap, and she performs her creation at the big party.
Is It Any Good?
This special is a sweet and sunny preschool treat, just like the Alma's Way series. While the series typically focuses on Alma's Puerto Rican community in the Bronx, Alma Goes to Puerto Rico allows Puerto Rico itself to be in the spotlight. Alma has some frustrations like realizing her Spanish isn't good enough to communicate easily with her Bisabuela, but mostly she learns that she fits right in with her family in Puerto Rico. The special comes across as a love letter to Puerto Rico, and Alma is happy to sing and dance along.
