What's the Story?

Mediocre adult animation often feels indebted to either The Simpsons or Family Guy. Universal Basic Guys splits the difference: Comedy-wise, the series aims for crude laughs (and casual racism) reminiscent of Family Guy, but without the absurdist boundary pushing that made Family Guy take off. Like The Simpsons, the idea of family is at the heart of Universal Basic Guys, and the characters inevitably work through their wild ideas with compassion and communication. The result is a show with a muddy moral center that doesn't push its crude humor far enough to be actually funny.

  • Families can talk about the Hoagies brothers. What is the premise of the series? How do the Hoagies bros react to their new lifestyle? What choices do they make? How do the consequences of those choices change their lives?

  • Does this show have a moral? If so, what is it? How does the series present this lesson? Do Mark and Hank have a sense of morality? What are their values?
