What's the Story?

In UNCLE SAMSIK it's the verge of the 1960s and different political interests and businesses are allying to shape the powers structure of post-war South Korea. A man who calls himself Uncle Samsik (Song Kang-ho, Parasite) prides himself on taking care of the men who serve him, but his methods for grabbing power can be brutal. Enter a young idealist, a government economist named Kim San (Byun Yo-han) whose charismatic vision of a post-war democracy catches Samsik's attention. Can Samsik be the puppet master he aspires to be? Will Kim San stay true to his vision of a perfect union? Or will he be sullied by the scheming going on around him?

Dry at times, electric at others, this look at the formation of the power elite of post-war South Korea picks apart the players behind a young government. Uncle Samsik is a sophisticated, multi-layered show that doesn't coddle viewers and rarely cracks a smile. But behind the file folders and backroom handshakes, there's a worthy story being told that has a historical hook.

This political drama may fly over the heads of teen viewers. It's best enjoyed by history buffs who enjoy stories of kingmakers who dare to take risks.
